Rebels in Syria have seized Aleppo. There is speculation that Turkey is behind this, as they have been supporting the majority Sunni population while Russia has backed up the minority Alawite government, that also has backing from Iran.

The idea being that as Russia now is elsewhere preoccupied, and Iran is involved in the conflict with Israel, Erdogan saw a chance to further his own agenda in Syria.

Now, the main group that took Aleppo is an offshoot of Al Qaeda, but they are allied with several other more moderate Sunni groups that have ties to Istanbul.

It's kind of messy in the Middle East. I was going to say "right now", but let's face it - it has been a mess for the past 3000 years.

Well, in the Budapest Memorandum, the treaty that was signed when Ukraine handed over all their nukes to Russia, Russia promised to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Since Russia isn't living up to their part of the agreement it seems fair that Ukraine should get all their nukes back.

Apparently there might have been some kind of a deal reached between Assad and the Kurds and Turkey was left out of the loop which angered Erdogan and led to his launching this situation with the jihadis.

Also, Assad's main support for his highly impopular regime comes from Russia, Iran and Hezbollah.
Right now all three are busy elsewhere, so I guess Erdogan saw a window of opportunity and took it.

Also, Erdogan is not really supporting the Al Qaeda offshoot, but some other Sunni groups, mainly Turkmens in northern Syria, that have joined forces with that bunch. So it is a sort of indirect link, but just the same it is probably Turkey that is the main force behind what is happening right now.
