Yeah and the contracts given take OEL to age 36 and Tanev to age 40. :wow:

OEL already returned to the "the player he was in Vancouver" towards the end of last season.

Oh he started the season well while Ekblad and Montour were on the shelf

... averaging around 24-25 minutes in the first 16 games while those two were out.

But his icetime declined steadily after that.. and he averaged just 15:27 in the playoffs

No goals and just 5 assists in his last 26 regular season games.

Just 2 goals and 4 assists in 24 playoff games.

He's a bottom pairing guy now and will be 33-years-old this month.

Ridiculous contract to give a guy like that.

Tanev's contract is also ridiculous at age 34.

They also re-signed Liljegren at $3M x 2... twice what he's worth.

Now Hakanpää at $1.5 x 2 was a very solid signing.

Stolarz at $2.5 x 2 was decent, but going with 2 backups in net is dumb.

They tried to get a true #1 in Markstrom, but failed, so they settle for a career backup?

Neither Woll nor Stolarz have ever played more than 28 games in a single season, so this is a huge gamble.

And speaking goaltending gambles, they extended Woll at $3.66 x 3.

Woll, who has played a grand total of 38 NHL games.

So I'm not sure they've improved their defense + goaltending much

... and they're running back the same forward group minus Bertuzzi.

They tried to get Marner to waive, but he won't, so same old I guess.

Marner will be a major distraction this year and if he falters at all the boo birds will be out in full force.

Yeeeeup, I'm one happy camper!

Marner faltering and the boo birds coming out could be the best thing for them. Ole Mitch is a snivelling little entitled pussy. If he is struggling and the fans collectively turn on him he may decide he will move. This could very much pave the way for the Leaves to make a move where Marner (salary retained) gets packaged up with one or Woll or Stolarz and returns a legit goalie and a pick.

Playfair has proven himself pretty good at finding deals where large pieces move both ways. They don’t always pan out, and we know that the Shannaplan will never materialize. But that makes it all the better as Leafdom gets the high hopes only to be crushed again and again.

:D

Didn't like their first year, but this management group is really impressing me now. Hopefully this means they've at least somewhat addressed decades long pro-scouting issues.

I read that a day or so ago but until the season starts we won't know. But it is why teams stayed away from him, including Dallas. And why he went for the contract term and cap he did.

Gawd, we have a near riot when Allvin traded for an injured Hronek. Could you imagine if he signed this guy?

Hakanpaa is just the latest injured player Leaves have signed/traded for...

Matt Murray, Nick Foligno, and John Klingberg... and now Hakanpaa.

They're also asking for trouble in signing old men Tanev and OEL to term.

(they let Brodie walk cuz he got too old, replaced him with the even older Tanev)

Also lately, oldtimers Giordano and Reaves.

They're getting to be an old decrepit team, window will closing before long...

They are bringing it all back with a new group of old men defensemen and a starting goalie who's never played more than, what, about 30 games in any professional season at any level, a veteran backup who is good but has never been a starter, and a reclamation project in the minors.

They've tried the new group of old men defensemen several times. Will this be different? Really? I just can't see it.

The Red Wings, Sens, and Sabres all seem like they are a bit of a mess. They all have much more talent than their darkest years but haven't figured it out. What if they do? What if those teams get that talent to work? Who's going down first? Tampa or Toronto? (Montreal is probably a little further away, but also seems (to me) to have a little more direction as to how they will try to get where every team wants to be that the Sens, Wings, and Sabres. Still, they need something on defense and I am not sure Reinbacher's the one).

Marner isn’t on the team I’m picking for Team Canada for Four Nations. He has to be one of the most overrated players in the game. I’ve never got it.

"Maple leaves fans third most miserable in NHL, survey says"

1. Calgary Flames
2. Arizona Coyotes (gone)
3. Toronto Maple Leaves

So really then, it's...

1. Calgary Flames
3. Toronto Maple Leaves

The two most hated teams at this site!

Warms one's cockles.

No doubt Leaves will be #1 once Treliving puts in a little more time there (he had 9 years in Calgary).
