This could have been avoided by just not extending him last summer. I can't help think that we extended him, re-signed Baser and extended Garland as part of our efforts to convince Hughes to stay and it is backfiring spectacularly.
Rutherford is finding out the hard way what it is like trying to build a team without a Crosby, Malkin or Letang on the team. I guess he thought Pettersson, Miller and Hughes would do. Guess he found out not.
I just wish someone had the guts to gut the team. Ya it would mean several years of sucking, oh wait, just like now. But I see no future with this team. I thought once the Twins were done we would rebuild. Now we have to wait until all these vets age out or come clamouring to be traded.
Did I say I am sick about the Demko news. I imagine if he had been named to the Olympic team he would be just fine. This guy is a head case and so predictable.
But maybe, just maybe, this is the final nail in the coffin of hope that ownership needs to green light a major dump. But we know the league will hardball the Canucks and we wont get too many, if any good hockey offers for our garbage. But getting rid of the players who were here for the shit show and whose lack of leadership was unable to prevent the fiasco that led to all of this.
So true - and this is what it comes down to now. I'll always cheer for the 'team' - but that team is currently 90% placeholders. Hughes gave us a great reason to watch each night - but now what? Even as a long-time fan of Boeser, he's just looking so lost out there - hard to watch. Petey? If there was ever a time for him to take this team on his shoulders and do something - now would be the time. Demko? He's been fun to watch, but you just can't watch and not be expecting something like the last game.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 2:22 pm I am feeling so done with this team. Is this based on any insider info or just pure speculation and understandable frustration? I'm genuinely curious as I never got that vibe from Demko. He just strikes me as a really solid goalie who is now unfortunately injury prone.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 3:00 pm Demko has been spectacular when healthy and when he wants to be. But he reminds me of that star employee that knows/believes that the company is nothing without him and can hold the company for ransom. He let us down so many times. We would have beat Edmonton hands down if he had been healthy. Whether we would have gotten by Dallas or Florida is another matter though. Demko has found ways to quit on this team throughout his career. I have been advocating for trading him going on 3 years now. He is so mentally fragile his next moves are predictable. This latest injury was forecast. I knew he would suffer another injury if not elected to play for USA in the Olympics. It is what he does. He quits and sulks and in a vane way makes himself, in his eyes, indispensable.
I believe the Canucks were on the verge of moving on from him which is why they bit on the Lankinen deal. But for some reason they changed course and extended Demko. A prime example of hanging on to a player long past his best use by date. And I can only imagine what insider info they have that we are not privy to.
And I think that's the worst part of this whole season. The players are one thing - but the owners and management have shown that they really have no plan here. I doubt there are many any fans left who feel this current regime can dig itself out of the mess they put itself in.Carl Yagro wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 3:09 pm Frankie can't even finish a hybrid rebuild of the stadium seats.
Partly both. There is or was internal division about Demko going back 3-4 years. Rutherford and Allvin wanted/needed more time to evaluate. There is a strong believe he is mentally fragile. It is a delicate situation because while they believe he is injury prone they have been left confused by his recovery times. I think there is a belief that he can be a difference maker but confidence in his durability have worn thin. Perhaps extending him was meant to send a message to the rest of the league that they had full confidence in him. The rest is my conjecture.rockalt wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 3:08 pmIs this based on any insider info or just pure speculation and understandable frustration? The goalie market has been depressed for years, so I worry less about Demko's extension than other screw ups by this management group. Maybe it's just my PTSD from the Cloutier years, but throughout this debacle of the last 10ish years, the Canucks have surprisingly had very solid goaltending and we might be taking this for granted.
In any case, I'm all part of team tank at this rate - I just probably wouldn't start with Demko given the limited return.
