I applaud the idea to create this thread!

Our society tends to focus on the negatives. The media is looking for clicks. Politicians want to sow fear and division to rally their troops.
And the rest of us worry, so we focus more on threats than on good news and opportunities.

Meanwhile, the past 200 years have been an incredible success story for mankind. We who live today have it far better than the generations that came before us. Life expectancy is up, child mortality is down, we have gone from a world where all but a handful lived in poverty to one where the global majority leads pretty decent lives. This is basically also the reason of the current obesity problem. Throughout history, starvation was not just a threat, it was a commonly occurring reality. Our bodies and brains are hardwired to favour energy dense food and store fat. It is only in the last century that we have found ourselves living in abundance, and we are not programmed for that.

A hundred years ago less than 1% lived in a country that granted suffrage to all it citizens, regardless of race or gender. Today roughly half the world population live in some sort of democracy.

But we hardly ever think about all this. We just look at the latest scary headlines and worry that things may be headed the wrong way.

I’m a numbers nerd, so I apologize that this is not a nice anecdote, but a handful of charts.
That’s who I am, that’s what I do. But I hope it still helps lift the mood.

The late Hans Rosling wrote a great book, Factfulness, which both shows how much better things have gotten and deals with why we do not realize this and instead tend to think that things are constantly getting worse. It’s a great read! Truly recommend it.
Teaching students he realized that most of us still think the world looks like it did in the 1960’s, while in reality things have improved immensely everywhere. He started wondering why these misconceptions are so widespread and addresses it in his book.

Here’s a video summarizing the things that make it hard for us to see the positives:

You can find the book here:

Just have to add a picture, this is a page in the book.
What better measure to show that the world has gotten better than guitars per capita?

Positive for the site that Blades of Steel is adding to the discussions again.

Long time he's been dabbling in Canucks forums and a very worthy addition regardless of topic.

Even more positive would be to see his old school pals AP and Keyser jump in once in a while.

I can read the promotional summary of your autobiography now…..

City slicker who bought his Benz’s and a private gulf island on the back of poor, hardworking, rural folk.

Sorry Donny. I just had to…..

I’m blaming the Tourette’s.

Per, I remember a long time ago someone saying "if every year is worse than the last, why are we still in the best times ever?"

Yeah, where is that Keyser guy.

Prolly same place I’ve been!

Positive shit is this last couple years have been the busiest of my life professionally and personally. But with that comes lack of free time as one would imagine.

Have back to back grad years for the kiddos coming up which is pretty hard to believe.

Ima do my best to stick around a bit more as I heard a rumour this place has been cleaned up a little bit!

Life’s full cuz! Positive and some not so of course.

Watchin Nucks when I can and hoping we can somehow snag some luck this year at the draft.

Mostly working. Running the kids to sports, golfing fortunately when the season permits. Little of everything!

How about yourself?

I'm semi retired these days doing weird shit out in the frozen quilt. It's a shitty winter this time and has me questioning life choices living here through 8+ blizzards and counting.

I'm on a new year's tolerance break so my brain is firing on all cylinders which isn't always a great idea. The world can't handle me at full throttle so I need to channel my energies into the arts. I've been painting and I dunno but it looks kinda good? Maybe?
