It feels like the rule of law is under threat in the USA.

This has happened before, and it was largely supported at the time.

A US citizen, a veteran to boot, on his way to work, having his car window smashed in and being pepper sprayed by ICE agents who then drag him off and detain him for three days, for no reason. Well, except racism, of course.

He told them he was as citizen. He asked for a lawyer, he asked to call his family. Nothing. Not even told why he was detained.
Locked up in detention for three days while his family had no idea where he was.
He didn’t even get to shower off the pepper spray and missed his daughter’s birthday.

I hope that all ICE agents at some point get to answer for their crimes. Lock them up and throw away the keys!
The Nuremberg trial established that ”just following orders” is no excuse for crimes against humanity.

I understand that politics in the USA has always been a bit crazy but under Trump it seems to have increased a hundred fold.

You don’t need to necessarily agree or love the opposing party but this hatred is out of control. The media is out of control with their biased reporting. Again yes I know it’s been there but now they don’t even try to hide it.

If Dems win the next election and both houses it’s going to be a new blood bath.

In a civilised country still adhering to rule of law, he would have been allowed to see a lawyer, would have been informed of why he was being held, would have been allowed to contact his family and the arrest would have to be approved by a judge.

And you seriously think they would have done this to a white guy?

And it’s not just this guy. There seem to be thousands of cases like this. People being abducted on their way to work.
They should be able to just check his identity and then release him.
I mean, he was abducted just outside his workplace. I’m sure his employer could have confirmed his identity.
They’re looking for illegal immigrants. He is a US citizen. Case closed.

Investigations estimate that from 2012 through early 2018, ICE wrongfully arrested and detained about 1,480 U.S. citizens. 
• A legal-firm update suggests “170+ U.S. citizens have been held by immigration agents during enforcement actions” in 2025 alone. 
• Data on “wrongful detentions” often mix U.S. citizens with lawful residents or other categories and the criteria vary greatly, making exact counts difficult.

Yeah 170 is not a lot considering the swelling numbers of ICE and the number of arrests they're making. It happens. It's the denial of access to a lawyer, inability of relatives to locate them, and length of detention that are alarming. I think a lot of this may have to do with the privatisation of the holding facilities. These companies are paid a per diem per inmate so they have an interest in "losing" people in the system.
