Can't speak for American schools, but in Canada and the UK critical thinking is required in all classes..
Define "critical thinking".
Without getting all post modern (post-modern?) in its simplest form critical thinking is about questioning assumptions, and making judgments using one's own reason, while taking into account things like evidence, context, accepted and controversial theories, and scientific method.
The beauty of the Canadian and Brit education systems is that it allows for kids to make up their own damn minds. Whether they are right or wrong is almost irrelevant. The key is to always question and never accept just because the text book says so.
but I think they would be preaching to the choir considering the Doctor's take on global warming

Actually (sadly) my "take on global warming" mirrors that of the dreaded 'scientific consensus' if you read my posts.
And I strongly disagree with your take on the Canadian education system.

I have to admit I kind of glossed over the whole scientific consensus / method debate figuring (assuming

) that you were taking to task the blind acceptance of statistics, quoting of studies that haven"t been queer reviewed, and anecdotal evidence for global warming.
I also just assumed that global warming is kind of self evident due to statistics, studies and anecdotal evidence...
by the way I recently watched a BBC documentary on William Wordsworth who penned "I wandered Lonely as a cloud" on April 15, 1802, the documentary was filmed on the same lake on April 15, 2012, exactly 210 years later and the daffodils were all gone as they had bloomed a whole month earlier... pretty clear evidence that the climate has changed one way or the other?
and I am sure there are many who would disagree on my take of the Canadian system

Oh dear, had a meeting today with a U of T professor who is studying climate change, not good, not at all but to think there are still deniers...like those that believe the earth is flat or that jesus was the son of god

Or perhaps you read about a strawman built by Per.
He named said strawman "Strangelove".
Confusing I know, but then one must rise above mustn't one.
Unlike said strawman, I am on record as agreeing with the 'scientific consensus' that the Earth is presently experiencing a warming trend, and that anthropogenic [human] activity has an effect on the climate.
BTW there is no 'scientific consensus' that the Earth is headed toward climate catastrophe.
I sincerely hope you didn't gloss over that last sentence.

There is scientific consensus that the Earth is getting warmer but no consensus that it is catastrophic or that it is completely man made...
No I agree with that last sentence and I am not stocking MC D and canned Tuna for the post apocalypse either. The earth has been warmer than the present with Humans on it before and it will be colder again I am sure. With or without anthropogenic help. I guess I think that the idea that we are that much in control of our destiny is a tad hubristic...

And speaking of the construction of strawmen:
Per wrote:Seriously, Doc, it seems we're almost on the same page here. We both agree it's happening, neither of us thinks it's the end of the world. Hell, it was a lot warmer back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and there was a period during the bronze age that was hotter than it is now as well.
Anyway, the main difference, imho, is that you seem to be more annoyed with those that run around in circles screaming 'the sky is falling' and I'm more annoyed with the people who are in denial. Shrug. Not much to build a good debate on. We're being reduced to debating the semantics of 'consensus', 'wit', 'runaway', etc and of course the size of ohdee's penis.
Who's misrepresenting who, eh?

Speaking of my buddy Galileo Galilei (aka the "father of science"), we don't know whether or not... if he were alive today... he would agree that global warming is indeed occurring as per the available data. And of course during his lifetime he would have scoffed at the idea of a flat Earth if someone were to suggest such a thing (no one ever did). He did however, and perhaps still does, strongly believe that Jesus was the only begotten son of God.
FUN FACTS!

Right, you wrote off the misrepresentation of yours truly to mere ignorance of the word "runaway"!
Personally I prefer a misrepresentator to an ignoramus but you Euros are an entirely different animal wot?

Fuck the righties, fuck the lefties, fuck the heathen scientists, fuck the born-again christians/muslims....they can all debate and (hopefully) kill each other off arguing who to blame and who is right. It doesn't take a degree to tell the climate is changing, if people wanna waste time and energy debating it I say fuck'em...me? grassroots baby, fuck the government, fuck the churches, fuck the universities, fuck the NGOs and fuck the mother fucking corporations.........permaculture

Climate is always changing. The earth is a very dynamic place. No need to get worked up over it.
