He needed to be ready a year ago. This contract should never have been on the table.
Nobody would ever have expected what would happen next though. He was absolutely lighting it the fuck up. His production trajectory was headed to the stratosphere (130+ pt pace) and there was no sign of an impending catastrophic collapse in his mental well being.
Then he found the little pink ribbon
Not sure I 100% agree with that Cousin. He seemed to stall right before last season's All Star game, his play after the ASG was already beginning to be of a concern and noticed by people even on this board. Granted it had not fallen off a cliff, but weren't there already rumours before the ASG that he was nursing an injury then?
Like Topper and a few others, I never liked that contract. Hopefully he, assuming the Canucks don't trade him, just needs a proper off season and he can get both physically and mentally 100% for next season.

I wrote several time that although he was somehow getting points, he was not driving the play or dominating play the way he had earlier in his career. Miller and Brock were driving the offense. Miller was leading the league in points and Brock was the #1 goal scorer in the league. Then there was the NY roadtrip where Ricky re united the lotto line. I ran the numbers, it was something like 12% of his season's points in those four games. It was an extraordinary spike in the data. Immediately after those days in NY, the rails completely fell off. From then on, he stunk the joint out. As before, he didn't dominate, but unlike earlier, he was no longer accruing points. He flamed out.
Prior to the season, I said the big thing leading in was Scooter driving the play. He never did.

Leon Draisaitl has never scored 130 points.
MacKinnon has once.
Petey a 130 point player.

He's been a play driver for the majority of his career. Nice try.
We're all pretty much in agreement that he needs to step up.

At the time he had like a 1.3 PPG or something so if it had continued he would've scored in that range.
And he was a better all round player
at the time. Oh yes it's true....(To steal one from the strangegloved one)
In fact,
at the time 11.6 was considered a slight discount as the rumoured figures all started with 12
Unfortunately my whole argument is contingent upon him playing as he had been consistently demonstrating...
at the time
Tops if I'm reading you're point correctly, you are in essence acknowledging that he had been an elite play driver and top line centre prior to last year. I'll debate that as he had been pretty damn effective til at least Christmas, if not right up til the ASG.

He's a couple of seasons removed from being a play driver, there were glimpses two years ago but that was it.
Remember my " overrated" thread

And if you recall, there were at least 2 of us here who said nothing north of $9M for this player. Right now even $9M would be a $4M overpayment.

I'm all in on trading him.
No need for the pitch fork shit.
I could care fucking less. 7 or 8 folks flipping about the Alien. Picked a side.... why? Maybe both are wrong and obviously management is wrong. How about everyone is wrong? Amazing concept: So fascinating

How tradeable is he with that contract?

...but hopefully
management knows the whole story and can make a decision.
And that's the key here, isn't it. They knew who they were signing to that contract, and obviously must know more than us - BUT - even they weren't expecting this fall off. If it's an injury, rest him. If it's in his head, work on that. If it's conditioning, work on that.
At this rate, it won't be long before the whole town is against him, and management will feel forced to move him.
We just can't have a normal season without ongoing drama, can we?
Nope. The media here makes sure of that.
When your local media is driven by drama, they find drama. Look how they are running around crowing about who got the “scoop” on breaking the Peterson and JT were not friends. Then blew it way the fuck out of proportion. Ffs.. it’s been going on ‘for years’ some say. Well during those ‘years’ both guys had career years in points and played same line. They proved that they were pros and could play together. Sounds more like one of them (or perhaps management) finally got sick of the media constantly stirring the pot on the subject.
Now they are saying JT was a cancer to prove themselves right. Former players - who actually spent time with the guy- are saying that JT is a good dude and great teammate. Who do you believe??
The media in Vancouver simply can’t report facts. Every story is actually an ‘opinion’ piece that is a character hit to create clicks.
Vancouver media sucks balls.

I've done this exercise before and in greater detail, but for reference.
2023/24 Pettersson
Month Goals Assists Points Games
Oct 5 11 16 9
Nov 4 10 14 15
Dec 4 9 13 12
Jan 14 7 21 13
AllStar Game Feb 2
Feb 1 9 10 13
Mar 4 5 9 12
Apr 1 4 5 8
Jan NY Roadtrip 7 6 13 4
March 2nd New Contract signed
I noted his play falling off mid November (remember the Oiler blowouts to start the season and the series of 5-2 games when everyone was padding stats). Where was his goal scoring outside of January that earned him $11.6M/yr?
I recall when I did this before I broke down games he was held off the score sheet, picked up a point or had a multipoint game as a star player should be putting up several multi point games. In other words, how consistent his star performances were.
Here's a quick look at that and the % of games each month he was held off the score sheet. Even with that high flying January, this shows how much the 4 games, (Pit, NYR, NYI, NJ) on that January road trip distorted/padded his numbers. He blanked in 31% of the games that month.
Month Multipoint Single Point Zero % Shutout
Oct 6 1 2 22%
Nov 2 6 4 27%
Dec 5 2 5 42%
Jan 6 1 4 31%
Feb 2 6 5 38%
Mar 3 2 7 58%
Apr 0 5 3 38%

And in a 2-1 losing effort tonight he managed a helper but didn’t generate a single SOG in 18 minutes of TOI. The team was outshot 32-15 by Utah…..when the team needs pucks at the net he was nowhere to be found.

I watched the last 90 seconds.
He turned the puck over once along the boards in the O zone with Silovs pulled on a soft soft play where he allowed himself to get caught in a double team as opposed to being proactive, then put Chytil in a bad spot with an ill timed pass resulting in another turnover.
Not a good player at all rght now.
Still hoping he proves me wrong long term.
