Yeah, somehow he always knew he was going to die in a car accident. Spooky.

^There's another one, David Byron (RIP) born in the same year as Marc Bolan, and also died much too young.

If you wonder what Björn and Benny have been up to since ABBA retired, they have been writing musicals. First Chess, then Mamma Mia (which is basically a medley of old ABBA songs) and then Kristina, which is based on Vilhelm Moberg’s trilogy about a group of Swedes migrating to America in the 19th century (The Emigrants, The Immigrants and The New Country).

This song, You Must Be There, is from Kristina, and is sung by the protagonist. She is very devout, but after first having lost a child and then been told by the doctor that another childbirth will kill her, so she must never be intimate with her husband again, she cries out in agony and for the first time questions the existence of God and whether her life has meaning.

They chickened out a bit in the English lyrics though. Every time she sings ”I reach for your hand” the original Swedish lyrics say ”if you don’t exist”.

Neither lyrics come to a conclusion on whether God exists or not, but the desperation in the Swedish version goes deeper.

Btw, while both Chess and Mamma Mia have been performed on stage in both London and New York, Kristina hasn’t. While everyone agrees the songs are great, there has been doubt whether a US audience would care to sit through 4.5 hours of the hardships of a handful of Swedish immigrant settlers out on the prairie...
