Just trying to get excited for a "quick" rebuild hopefully, drafting some high talent that gets to their potential, and fingers crossed, some lower picks that perform above.
10-4....I agree with your post.
I'm actually cautiously optimistic.
As Nuckertuzzi said yesterday we could realistically pick in the top 35 - 4 times in the upcoming draft.
With the foundation on D you refer to and Demko (if if if) we could turn this whole thing around realtively quickly and not have to wait 5 years for results.
All up to ownership and management to do the right thing....for once.
The problem with fast rebuilds, where you acquire a bunch of young talent over a couple years, is that when they pan out and the rebuild is successful, you run into having a bunch of impact players all due for new contracts at the same time. When it is spaced out you gain wiggle room there via normal year over year cap increases.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..
Even if management does draft a cohort of young stars or difference-makers that end up due for big raises that make it hard to fit them under the cap, management can still trade them for help elsewhere or further draft pick/prospect capital. At least they would have a valuable asset that they could trade to improve the roster. Right now, all management has are vets who may fetch a first-rounder depending on the market for them.
Getting even three players who can play top-9/top-4 minutes on a contending team - regardless of position - in this upcoming draft would be HUGE even if one only turns out an outright star.
A top 4, of Hronek, Buium, Willander and MP29 is a pretty good start to a rebuild. DPetey seems to be in some sort of Coach's doghouse - but I see a player there. Not hard to assume a bottom pairing, shut down type role at the very least.
I also do not understand why DPetey is in the coaches bad books, he is better than Joseph and has a high potential IMO. Will he be another Podkozin that because the coach does not like him and sees nothing but faults we screw up a potentially good player. Not saying 1st paring.
All Petterssons need to go as if they had Russian heritage. Not sure anyone can tolerate a wimpy 60-70 pt setup third line guy pulling in $11.6 cap hit. OEL > MPete (two senile moves from our CTE management). DPete still can't skate.
Forwards, Karlson and maybe Ogram (give the kid a chance)
Defense - Hronek (if he is willing to hang a round) Buium and Willarder ...
Meyers is a toss up but his mentorship value is exceeded by his trade value. Likely the best trade chip in the lineup, vet, steady, physical, solid 3-6 Dman, 2 Dman in pinch, with the ability and smarts to do some PP time as well as solid PK. All on a reasonable contract.
Pull the life jackets from the rest in the Sea of Granlands
If management had a modicum of competence there would be a solid 1c, 2c combo and the most dynamic defender in the league playing for this team.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

100% agree with the last statement.
200% agree.
When they did have that for several years the failure was not surrounding it with all the other pieces to complete the recipe. Sorta did in 19/20 and 23/24 only to piss it away in their respective off seasons by ownership cheapness and incompetent management.
All in all it's just as well. The previous core wasn't gonna get it done no matter how we brewed it up. Time to move on to the next.

...and there it is again.
The scourge of our very existence.
In a way those two anomalous playoff seasons were the worst thing that could happen. Because in typical bad-Canuck-timing fashion they happened to fall on years when we had a lot of sellable assets. Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli, Stecher, Cole, Lidstrom, Zadorov, etc.. Yes, some of these guys were acquired mid-season based on success, but the point is it's an astounding amount of assets pissed away for absolutely nothing to show. Imagine how we would look today if we didn't waste assets to acquire them and/or sold then, or managed to retained some to optimize their trade value for later. Today all these players / future assets gone for absolutely nothing, thanks to "success". We would've been better off sucking in retrospect. Funny thing this hockey.
