Yeah...my quick two bits...no time as I keep saying...I've oft wondered why they have not attempted to move them off each other PP wise...
..if you think about it, even in a mirocosm, it makes hella-sense.

Re: The Petey Predicament
I'd say because of ego? Which front-line player is going to be happy on the second unit?

Re: The Petey Predicament
EP40 could have used a little ego adjustment at a few stages.
I don't pay much attention.
Maybe they did.
Although guys like you and UW wouldn't be talking about it if they had.

Quinn plays the second unit. And the first.

Yeah, that's pretty fair.
I wonder how his brain works at 135 seconds.
Can he control the human impulse to do it yourself because it is not working otherwise.

Re: The Petey Predicament
I read Petey and QH on PP1 different. To me, when together, it looks like Petey defers to Hughes.
Last night he WANTED the puck, and the PP ran through him instead of QH.
If those 2 could figure out how to split the deferring time (like McDrai), we would have an explosive, unpredictable PP…

If I may chime in...Mëds wrote: ↑Mon Oct 27, 2025 1:14 pmI for one do NOT think that Pettersson and Hughes have great chemistry on the PP. QH wheels around to draw defenders and force movement, when the PP runs through him that way the pass to Petey is often not great or comes when Petey is trying to anticipate both the when and where to receive that pass.UWSaint wrote: ↑Mon Oct 27, 2025 1:07 pm But now Petey is bigger, and he’s throwing his body around, bearing down without the puck. What if he could combine what he did as a rookie—that style of offensive play—with the finally filled out frame? That would be a player…. That’s the hope for this year. Better still if he’d learn to catch and settle the puck smoothly and shoot it a lot more…..
I think you're into something. Hughes wants to move the puck around the o-zone with his skating rather than passing. Everyone is taught young that the puck always moves faster than anyone can skate.

Re: The Petey Predicament
I think some of the reason for that though is because too many of the players on the Canucks during Hughes tenure as the 1PP QB have been rather static and not moving enough, Hughes was then forced to move the puck himself because the lack of away from the puck movement made it easy for PK'ers to pressure him.

Re: The Petey Predicament
Oh for sure it is, and he's had quite a bit of success doing it too
The thing is it may be why they are more stationary than a typically successful power play that moves the biscuit around constantly.
How would they even try and correct that one though... "Hey Quinn...ya buddy we're gonna have to go ahead and get you to stop over handling pucks so your teammates can play with them too"
Ya nobody's going there

Scotty Bowman, Hitch, Coach Q, and The Irishman, all woulda had the nutsack to go there if it meant more PP goals.

Re: The Petey Predicament
The thing with Quinn is like he always wants to try and beat his pressure, hoping to turn a 5-on-4 to a momentary 5-on-3 for a scoring chance. When it works, even then the problem is he's compressed the 3-man triangle by driving in. Either he quick dishes to an open man immediately, or he has to shoot it. The problem is defenders have gotten better at clogging the middle in that event, so Hughes has to make a perfect pass or shot to have a hope. Also, when the PP runs through him alone it makes the {PK easier because you really only have to focus on stopping Hughes from doing what he wants to do out there.Cousin Strawberry wrote: ↑Mon Oct 27, 2025 9:23 pm Oh for sure it is, and he's had quite a bit of success doing it too

Alternating between the play running through Hughes and Petey opens up looks because they force defenders to focus on two stars vice one. When Petey was putrid and Miller was being bad Miller last season, Hughes really was the only viable option. Now with Petey finding his groove, he can become an alternative to Hughes running it. It was good seeing Petey at the point for stretches in Quinn's spot before moving to the half-wall. Keeps the opposition guessing. Hope they keep it up, because Quinn can only do so much at the point unless he hit's a God-level we have only seen a couple times last season.

Re: The Petey Predicament
The key takeaway, from this discussion within the discussion, is that Hughes and Petey finding a way to be the left shooting ocean-view version of MacKinnon and Makar will go a very long ways to the Canucks succeeding and thereby increasing the chances of Hughes wanting to stick around.

Re: The Petey Predicament
The thing is with Petey is he used to shoot a lot more on the PP. Last season and this season he seems to hesitate unless that set up is absolutely perfect. Sometimes he gets the puck from Hughes and it isn't perfect and he just passes it off. He looks frustrated at times, well more so last year.
When Hughes is dancing out there and others are moving then the passing is quicker and they tend together some good looks. But when he is dancing and others stop moving the play becomes stagnant. It becomes predictable.
I still think there number one play is to try to set Petey up but he has to get back to shooting it more and not waiting for that perfect pass. Look at the Big German, he takes the shot no matter how good/bad the pass, same as OV.
