Sort of. Rantanen’s actual salary this year was $6M compared to Hall’s actual of $5.25M. By retaining half of Rantanen but moving Hall, it’s basically saving $1.1 M or so in real money. Which would be similar to retaining around 45% of Hall and moving him. Would that have returned a 3d? Maybe, but they’d still need a trade partner with the cap space to take the rest and who wasn’t on Hall’s no trade list.

The move struck me as strange from Chicago’s perspective until you consider they are dealing with a very narrow market that could very well close up entirely. Remember he came to Chicago with Foligno for a couple of waiver wire level guys. While Hall is an okay player, he’s not close to a $6 million (cap hit) player.

Moving forward and looking at goaltenders and their salaries, surely this is a good comparable for Demko?
The NHL-leading Capitals signed Thompson on Monday to a six-year deal worth $35.1 million. He'll count $5.85 million against the salary cap when it kicks in next season through 2030-31.
While Demko may have better 'pedigree' he is also injury prone. I, if I was the Canucks, would only consider a slight raise for Demko because the salary cap is expected to keep going up.

I agree. If Demko stays as our starter the max I go is $6M.....and that is factoring an extension next year with a cap going up twice between now and then.

Swayman got $8M from Boston, and based on body of work and games played, I think is a better comparable to Demko.

However, the injury prone card may mean that Demko is willing to sign "significantly" under market value in order to secure term. No GM worth his salt is giving Demko the full value price tag on a long term deal.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

I would try to re-sign both to be honest. I am of the view that Demko will figure it out but I also do not believe he can be a 60 - 65 + game starter.

Something along the lines of:

5.5 - 6 mil per for Demko

2.5 - 3 mil per for Lankinen.

Would have a roughly 50 - 30 games split in regular season.

The catch here is that Demko has only played 50 or more games twice in his career.

His Vezina nomination came last year and he only played 51 games.

He played 64 games in 2021-22 and posted good numbers.

Every other season he has played fewer than 35 games.

Going with Thatcher you have to be looking at a 1A/1B system because that 50/30 split you suggest could easily see the 50 going to Lankinen because of injuries to Demko.

I agree that one of the limitations of the value of Demko is that it would be a foolish mis-allocation of resources to try to make him a 60 game workhorse.

But any reasonable assessment of his value going forward is contingent on medical reports to which we do not have access.

So Utah has come down to three names:

The Utah Hockey Club
The Utah Mammoth
The Utah Wasatch

Those Mormons really have the creative juices going, don't they?

What are the odds they stick with what they're already wearing??

That franchise is the joke that keeps on going.

Think they should have gone with "Yeti", has a nice ring to it.

God knows the Nepalese or Tibetans would cry cultural appropriation, or at least a bunch of entitled kids on university campuses will do it.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected six of the names the team filed under intent-to-use applications back in April. Notably, that list includes the Utah Yeti and Yetis, which is known as a fan — and organization — favorite.
