CC Random thread

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

You should rent Conclave, interesting ending.

Thanks for your comments UW, you're prompting me to rethink this.

I guess my view is that there does not need to be an a priori truth about "good" or "right". An atheistic view of the world can be that there are no truths other than the physical world itself. So morality stems from one's instinct for self-preservation, leading to a shared set of community values derived thru reason (or logic, if you will).
And that’s a fair position — one that is founded on a claim that (1) all reality is material and (2) (I think you are saying) the fundamental value maximizing the success of the survival instinct. At the individual level, that survival instinct is often best achieved by eliminating rivals for resources; so not sure if you are looking at survival beyond the individual to a species thing or somewhere in between. I am curious as to the answer to the question “why is survival good?” If it is instinct alone, we have many instincts, some of which conflict with others instincts and some of which are certainly destructive. I am not saying there’s a ready answer to the question, but I think most but the hyper nihilistic believe it to be a silly question because it seems so obviously true. Those obvious and unquestioned truths, though, find their source *somewhere*, whether intuition (and the “ick” response to death, especially mass death), cultural norms so ingrained as to seem natural, or the instinct most have to wish to assign meaning to this life and that a corollary (or possibly antecedent) to life having meaning is life having a greater than zero value. Whatever it is, I’ve come to the conclusion that in every moral structure, you get to a point where a value is asserted that cannot be justified in any other manner than “this is a given”. Some assign the giver as God, others point to consequential things if that value were not true that people agree are “obviously” bad without appreciating the fact that somewhere this “good” and “bad” have a source or principle that is the start of a moral framework. Theists call that God’s will or wisdom and often recognize that the alternative is that it is only the Will of man; atheists either never recognize they are just picking a first principle or assert the Will of what people call god is only the Will of man so what difference does it make?

I am not as convinced as you that morality is discovered through reason, though I am a big fan or reason. I think a lot of it—and this is assuming that a religious set of principles is *not* the product of an all good and all knowing creator—is the product of trial and error. The societies (including their religion) that survive and thrive are those with a moral code that benefits their survival (and thrivival). Religion is like evolution if there is no God. The best religions are those whose civilizations lasted in a manner that (1) made defending the group a virtue and (2) promoted producing people and things and at a far faster pace than it promoted killing people and destroying things.

The modern era is the first where atheism and materialism has been the dominant view. On the one hand, it’s brought about revolutions in medicine, food production, and resource distribution that has yielded a terrific “effective rate” of live births to reproducing people. On the other hand, it was also revolutionary in producing killing technology, and lacked a moral foundation that would have otherwise prevented the mass destruction of all of those people killed by the malevolence, indifference, or incompetence of the communists and nazis.

And yet societies with secularism higher on the hierarchy than centralized theology have thrived without that degree of destruction. As the belief wanes in the lives of the decentralized (non state enforced) religious people, however, we are entering a new era or declining birth rates and political movements ostensibly atheist but quite religious in ritual and belief structure. It is one thing to keep god out of government (as a formal matter), another thing entirely to eject him from piblix life. We will see how this shakes out, but my gut tells me this civilization ain’t permanent…..

Starship blowed up real good over the Turks and Caicos, though the heavy booster landed safely in the arms of it's recovery tower.
