World Championship 2023

Post by Per »

Elias Pettersson has agreed to play for Sweden.
Lucas Raymond and Rasmus Dahlin are also coming.
This could be a fun tournament to watch! 8-)

I assume the leaves will exit in time for Nylander to join as well.

Nah. New information. Petey wants to play, but because of his contract situation, insurance costs for the tournament would be forbiddingly high. :(

Got my ass kicked by a Silfverberg today, playing floor hockey. Now I'm going to watch his younger brother captain Sweden against Germany at the world championships over in Latvia/Finland.

Canada surprisingly lost to Switzerland, who seem to have a very strong team this year and will definitely be in the quest for medals.

Veleno tried to chop off Niederreiter's leg, which resulted in a five game suspension, which is letting him off rather cheaply imho, but Canada has a maximum of five games remaining in this championship, so I guess that's why they settled for this. Since the suspension is for IIHF games, a longwer suspension might mess with him participating in a tournamnet four-five years down the line, so "the remainder of the tournament" is probably a good call. Thankfully Niederreiter was not injured.

Veleno was channeling Matt Cooke there. Fifty games might have been fair.

And this is why it's a very good thing Petey didn't go over there:

Quarterfinals today:

US (1A) vs Czechs (4B)
Swiss (1B) vs Germans (4A)
Canada(2B) vs Finland (3A)
Sweden (2A) vs Latvia (3B)

I'm guessing semifinals will be US vs Canada and Swedes vs Swiss! 8-)

Canada underperformed vs Switzerland and Norway, but they tend to improve when the elimination rounds start.

Silovs robbed us. :(
Sweden won the shots 41-15 (13-8; 13-1; 16-5), but lost the game 3-1.

Probably good news for the Canucks, though. :look:

... and congrats to Latvia for making the world championships semifinals for the first time ever!

Let's hope our loss wasn't totally wasted and that they at least get medals.

Semifinals will be Canada vs Latvia and US vs Germany.

I expect a North American final and then Latvia just needs to beat Germany to get the bronze.
In a tournament where they've already beaten Sweden, the Czechs, Switzerland, Norway, Slovenia and Kazakstan, that should be doable.

This Silovs kid looks alright. He has started in eight out of eight games and won six of them. :|
The only losses were against Canada and Slovakia.

See Luvs? #BenningBuilt

Canada vs Germany in the Finals. Sweet goal by Fantilli. Can't believe the US choked (again).
