CC Random thread

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Brit still has the best ice in Van. Love playing there.

So many options on the Drive for apres game meal and drinks.

Heh, I'm glad you were a responsible human and left your car overnight after one of those nights, one of those crazy old nights... :D

Gather round kiddies, Topper has an AI tale to tell.

A small time junior mining promoter with computer geek background took the geophysical data from his mining claim and fed it into AI to have it tell a wonderful promotional story of buried riches.

He then went to the markets with his wondrous maps and 3D models showing great red bullseye geophysical targets and his AI generated story. He managed to raise a few million dollars from the gullible.

A savvy old geologist was soon contracted, given the database on the project and tasked with designing a drill program to test those big red bullseyes.

Unfortunately for the promoter, amid the data was publicly available geology map from a very respected geologist that when combined with the geophysical surveys revealed a very mundane explanation for the red bullseyes, removing the promise riches below.

The savvy old geologist and the promoter parted ways, The promoter (CEO) signed a guaranteed consulting contract for himself that would pay him 1/3rd of the millions raised.

The project was drilled. Results were never made public. The promoter moved on to promote another project with yet another AI generated story.

AI can only distill the information given it. Omit information or feed it erroneous information and it can not produce a verifiable result.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

I'm guessing the situation you saw / dealt with is just the tip of the iceberg of "AI Snake Salesmen" - it's only going to get worse for a while.

Absolutely. I even prefer to call it Artificial Ignorance.
It only knows what it has been told, which could be factual or wrong, and when it finds no information it will make shit up.

The only use I see for it is to summarize a large amount of information to give you an initial idea of it.

Or to make propaganda. I guess that will be its main use.
