They're going for the 4 fist round picks because they know the defense and goaltending isn't good enough to win a cup anyway. Since Taveras is aging rapidly now and Mathews is going to Arizona after his current contract expires, they are kick starting their impending rebuild now...

Canucks cap. Just under 5.1. Rousell starts the season on IR cap 3M
Waive Schaller, save 1M on cap
Waive one more save another 1M on cap
Waive one D save another 1M on cap
Suddenly we have 8M with 3M available on LTIR if we need it. Our cap is fine. Notwithstanding that Benning will find a way to move out someone.
