All I ever say is that Europe and AHL means only a little to how successful they will be in the NHL.

Definitely some truth to that. The different Leagues have different rink sizes and slightly differing interpretation of the rules, which means some players due to their style of play may fare better or worse than expected. Not to mention that injuries (like in the case of Rödin) may throw their trajectory out of course.

Nevertheless, here's a look at the NHL performance of the top twenty players based on seasonal PPG performance in the SHL before they turned 20:

It reads like a list of hockey nobility. Three players (Markus Näslund, Tomas Sandström and Daniel Sedin) had two seasons in the top twenty, so I added three more players to reach a full twenty. Out of these twenty only four (other than Elias) never played in the NHL and the fifteen who have have 6 Stanley Cups and 9 individual Awards between them, including 3 Art Rosses.

And the four who did not play in the NHL weren't flashes in the pan either. They all had long healthy hockey careers, albeit not in the NHL. I was actually surprised to realize Mikael Hjälm never played there. He played in two WJCs, two World Chamionships and two Olympic tournaments and was one of the better players in the SHL for several years. But I digress.

Anyway, the egg hasn't hatched yet, but realizing that Pettersson is performing better at this age than any Swedish player ever to play in the NHL, except for Kent Nilsson, really gets my hopes up. As he adds some weight and experience, he could really become a fantastic player!

Forsberg, Gradin, Sandström, Näslund, Nylander, Sedin, Sedin, Pettersson, Bäckström, Eklund, Krüger, Gustafsson, Sundström, Steen.... He's better than all of them. At this stage. Let's hope he can take it to the next level as well.

2 assists for Pettersson tonight in a game Växjö lost 5-3 to Luleå.
That brings him up to 31 points in 23 games.

Växjö were ahead 3-1 when former canuck prospect Daniel Rahimi (also playing for Växjö) hit a player in the head causing a concussion. Rahimi got a match penalty, and in the ensuing 5 minute power play Luleå scored four (sic!) goals and turned the game around,

Genius was on display once again, last night:

DiPietro - named 1st star
Demko 32 saves on 33 shots. Utica wins 2-1. S/O
Gadjovich - 2 goals, 1 assist - 2nd star
Lind - 1 goal/1 assist First game back after missing 7 with strep throat
Gaudette - 2 goals
Lockwood - 1 goal

Boeser - rookie of the month
Pettersen - generational!

It's like a better Leonardo Da Vinci piece - first Edmonton with mcdavid, the boring leaves matthews and then mr Elias Pettersson to add some Euro flav' to the Canadian renaissance.


Remember when pittsburgh used to tank to get all those all-stars? well those times have changed....fuck Pittsburgh...I'd move hell and earth to not let them win again-ala Edmonton.

In the last reported interview with him he stated clearly he saw himself returning the the NHL. He added something along the lines of, he had a three year contract in the KHL so he wouldn't talk about it anymore until that contract was up.

He wasn't ready emotionally for the NHL when he came here. Apparently his coach tried to tell him that. But by coming when he did he burned through his ELC. And I do think the chance to be selected for the Olympic squad did/does play into his thinking. This could be he one shot at representing Mother Russia. If he does get to do that, and if he performs well, he could cement a spot for future international tournaments.

His biggest problem with WD seemed to be confusion as to his ice time. He clearly felt he was top four and felt he wasn't getting top four minutes. He complained about not being on the ice in the last minute of a game to hold a lead, as an example. The other problem of course was he felt he was being pushed into a physical role/style that wasn't where he wanted to go. I think most of us would agree that as the season went on he should have played more. But I also think most of us agreed or hoped he would play more physical on a consistent asshole-ish way.

He has taken big steps to increase his points and be a leader on his team. I think his time in the NHL helped him whether he sees that or not. Will he return to Vancouver? I think that will depend greatly upon the state of the franchise and the role he sees for himself when his current contract is up. With our luck Luongo will retire early and we won't have the cap to sign Trymakin
