Re: Who gets traded next?
I don't expect another non-UFA to move until the Summer, but if we can somehow score another 3rd to round out 6 picks in the first 3 rounds this year (2 per), it's probably about as good as we can expect from these guys.
Then hopefully they'll be gone by season's end and the new guy(s) (RJ??) will swoop in and provide some hope with some bold, dazzling moves on the contractual guys. One can hope.

Re: Who gets traded next?
Grades at the price they got:
Moving Hughes F (considering every summer signing and coach hire was to keep him)
Moving Sherwood A+
Moving Myers A (nice guy, but the PK can only improve from here)
Moving Garland C (right move, but meh return, and hate losing his effort)
If they can move DeBrusk (without retention) or Kane (with retention) or Kampf for anything, they’ll get another A+, so I’m not expecting anything today.
Blueger’s a no brainer today. Grade to be based on return: 1st A+, 2nd A, 3rd B, 4th C, 5th or higher D, No trade F.
Peter ain’t going anywhere, so put it back in your pants.

Re: Who gets traded next?
Signing Garland at 6x6 starting at 30 yo with move protection was not a particularly team friendly deal. Maybe he gets a little more in free agency — that’s the risk premium on getting injured in the season before or a performance decline (which we’ve seen the past couple months.
I quite appreciate that Garland is one of the few Canucks who regularly had shifts that reversed flow, and I like this aspect of his game. His hands and shiftiness and motor allowed him to play a good possession game, but he lacked the playmaking and shot that could otherwise take him out of the middle six winger role. If you have other lines that can lead, it was a great luxury to have a single player that could stabilize a third line and make it dangerous or stabilize the ice, but Garland never enhanced quality teammates, which is why we learned that while his skills seem like they’d translate to a offensive game, they never really did.
It’s a role that makes sense for an otherwise decent team needing to improve its depth. And that’s important for playoff teams. But it’s not so important to get a first in return when the guy doesn’t play center, isn’t a high quality special teams player, and doesn’t play a heavier playoff-friendly game.
I would have though the draft was the best time for a Garland type player to be moved (because there isn’t a playoff skillset or proven playoff performer resume so there’s no deadline premium), but I don’t see a big error in judgment is saying, you know, if his offense continues to be dry the rest of the season, value is going to decline, and the likelihood that the player could be a bad deal in the last half of the contract (and maybe not nhl worthy as a player at the end) increases.
So the return is both disappointing and unsurprising that’s the best the market would provide. But wish these deals were being made by others….

Re: Who gets traded next?
Garland and Demko were signed early partly to encourage Hughes to re-sign.
That didn’t work, so getting rid of the contract before it kicks in makes sense.
Garland was a very good line driver with Joshua and Blueger.
If he finds the right chemistry, he will be a game changer in Columbus.
Hope he does!

Re: Who gets traded next?
I was hoping Garland could bring back another first either this year or next but probably that extension he signed prevented that.
Good luck to him though in Columbus.

Wow. That’s what this team needs to do is get rid of all its line drivers. Keep the UFA’s and coasters and toxic guys… That will fix our problems and teach young guys how to play.Picker of Cherries wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2026 4:36 am Garland and Demko were signed early partly to encourage Hughes to re-sign.

Yeah. No plan for the future on creating a culture of how they want the team to play, or the type of character they want on this team.
This could very well be the first time I ever watch the playoffs with the intention of finding a new team to follow.

Re: Who gets traded next?
It's too bad we gave Garland both 6 years, and a NTC. If it was only a 4 year contract, I would have expected a 1st coming back.
I am confused as to why GMs (not just ours) have been handing out these long, bad contracts. Too long for 30+ dudes. NMC clauses like candy, and front loaded contracts with signing bonuses that make the contract buyout-proof.

Re: Who gets traded next?
I think they were agreeing to these contracts on a bunch of assumptions that ended up being false: They would convince Quit to stay; Pettersson would find his form again; they would find that 2C; etc. Mistaking that one magical season in 23-24 as the start of the new norm instead of the outlier it turned out to be. Almost like a problem gambler who keeps pushing his chips in because he got on a heater recently.
The problem with a planning assumption that you will keep hitting on your bets in perpetuity.
I loved Garland while he played here. I was wondering if they would keep him to mentor the kids because of his work ethic and attitude, but that would assume that management has considered such things. The return, as some have mentioned, is likely a factor of his age and the term on the contract. Besides, who among the prime trade targets on the team has helped their trade value this year??? A first would have been nice, but a 2nd is nothing to sniff at.

Offloading that contract will end up being a major positive after a year or 3
