Miller is in the last year of his contract. If you are getting a 1st in return for him, retain 50% of his contract (I think that's max allowable) and ask for a bit more for the trouble.SKYO wrote:Continuing on the 2+ year sneak rebuild, if we are still bottom feeders by late February look to see Burrows dealt.
Miller would be hard to move due to his contract.
Sbisa could be moved (contender depth + expansion draft bait).
But in the end all I see is the wily ol' vet Burrows being dealt, as he's playing great this season and is a superb rental for a Cup contender on their 3rd/4th line. That'll be sad, but business is business and we need picks and Burrows would likely bolt via UFA July 1st anyways, just like Hamhuis.

Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..
Re: The Rebuild...
You know that. I know that. But nobody within the organization is willing to admit that. I'm just saying that we have 3 vets that are probably worth a 1st round pick. Only one of them is the right age to be part of future success (Tanev). Now is the time, especially so with Miller because a 37 year old goaltender is rarely worth a 1st rounder these days.....opportunity has come knocking in the form of injuries to Quick and Zatkoff.Strangelove wrote:As you say, he slipped up, we're 2 years into the rebuild...Mëds wrote:So now that Benning has officially slipped up and used the word "rebuild" in an interview...

Yeah the leaves tried to unload all of their vets to no avail last TDD, just a few iirc.Strangelove wrote:All this "get something for your old pending UFA" is overblown.
Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
How many UFAs are there every year?
Why I think it'll just be Burrows dealt and that's it for the canucks

Re: The Rebuild...
Players with term maybe harder to move this TDD to a contender. The acquired player would need to be protected or the risk exists they would be taken by Vegas. I susppose the acquiring team could treat them like a pending UFA but then the return would reflect that.
I agree Edler and Tanev could get us a first or a combination of players/picks/prospects. Neither has a full NMC so there could be options. I would rather look at moving them sooner rather than later or waiting until after the expansion draft, closer to the summer.
Miller isn't getting us a first, from anyone at the TDD. Miller right now is not worth too much, I doubt a first in any event.
Burrows at the TDD could get us a couple of 2nds or a decent prospect, not a grade A type though.
Benning needs to make a bold move here. Somehow reality needs to set in and an aggressive approach is needed to clear out those vets that have some value.

For starters, Tanev and Edler are not pending free agents.
The opportunity regarding Miller, where a team that is considered by some to be a contender loses their world class goaltender AND their back up for a huge chunk of the season AND the rebuilding team is sitting on a legit starter on his last year of a contract who has a NTC but his spouse and child live in said contender's city.....that doesn't come around often.
I didn't even mention another pending free agent.

Re: The Rebuild...
I would bet that Miller was worth a 1st to the Kings a month ago. He might be worth that 1st to them 2 weeks from now if Budaj loses a string of games again. It's not based so much on Miller as it is on the King's situation. Maybe Benning has to include a 3rd or 4th.....but that's nothing if you are getting a 1st in return.Hockey Widow wrote: Miller isn't getting us a first, from anyone at the TDD. Toffoli, Pearson, and King, are all going to need new contracts next season. Toffoli and Pearson are both young and have been big parts LA's success. While King is only a 25-30 point bottom-6 forward, he's been a solid part of that team for a while and has been a real contributor from the bottom-6 during the playoffs. The Kings need to take this shot this year before they have to start turning some of that roster over. And nobody is taking Brown unless LA gets lucky and Vegas bites (if they can, he has a M-NTC).
At the TDL Miller is worth a 2nd round pick at best.
I agree with you though. The trade deadline is not really the time or place for the Canucks to cash-in on anyone other than Burrows.

I was talking about Miller... and thinking about folks still whining about getting nothing for Vrbata/Hamhuis
... both with NTCs and intent on making trading them difficult.
BTW what did Vrbata get as a UFA, a one-year, $1M contract? (real sought-after player there)

Miller won't bring back a 1st in this pre-expansion-draft market Mëds.
For all we know LA might ride it out with Budaj... he's doing fine so far.
Quick is halfway through his recovery.
Yeah so maybe LA isn't interested (especially for a 1st lol).
Burrows could go at the TDL if he's playing well.
And as others have said, it's better to wait until at least post-expansion-draft on Edler/Tanev.
Gotta be a slow rebuild with Sedins + expansion draft...

Re: The Rebuild...
The other thing to remember is the expansion draft for this team and how our forward group is shaping up.
Protect: Sedin, Sedin, Eriksson, Horvat, Sutter...
Then you got to pick 2 of these three in Baertschi, Granlund and Hansen.
IF you want to protect both the young guys, then maybe you trade Hansen for a nice haul now along with Burrows.
Otherwise you can keep Hansen and personally I'd protect Granlund as I think he has higher upside over Bart, plus Grans can play center.

Re: The Rebuild...
Honestly, I'm hoping Granlund and Baertschi are protected. Hansen is a good trade chip and Burr would be a good one at the TDD or around that time. If Canucks are out then I am hoping Benning also moves Tanev for a few high end pieces/prospects. That way the key guys are protected and we may lose Sbisa.SKYO wrote:The other thing to remember is the expansion draft for this team and how our forward group is shaping up.

Man trading those three would be really beneficial for the long term health of this franchise.
We'd need the ol' trader Jim back in fashionable form for that those to happen and to accept the fact we are in a rebuild and not to be scared of pissing off the season ticket holders.
Quit being stubborn, adapt to change, realize the Sedins are going to retire after next season.
But I also realize other teams are just as ruthless and might not give up anything worthwhile for those good players.
It's also another reason why we need a good president who understands how to build a new healthy franchise from scouting/drafting & development perspective, as he could he can help Benning/Weisbrod in this transition from the old to the new Canucks.
Poor Linden, maybe he can put in a new role like vice president, that's what should have happened in the first place, so Linden can learn the ropes from a seasoned veteran prez who has had successful experience in a pro sports franchise building a winner.

Re: The Rebuild...
If we're going to do a proper/major rebuild, I think everyone should be available. The only exceptions are BoHo, Hutton, Boeser, Demko, Tryamkin and Juolevi. Maybe for Stetcher, Virtanen and Gudbranson, depending on the return. All the rest of the guys can be had.
Realistically though, I think Burr and Hansen should be traded while they still have some value. Last year, nobody wanted Burr. This year, Burr looks a bit rejuvenated and might have some value with most of his contract paid off. Hansen has been one of our better all around forwards, with only one year left on his contract after this season, we should move him sooner than later.

I'm not griping about that anymore. Is what it is. No argument on Edler and Tanev going after the expansion draft. Since they aren't rentals I figured they would be worth more at the draft anyhow.....and possibly to a team that wasn't a contender this year. And as others have said, it's better to wait until at least post-expansion-draft on Edler/Tanev.
