RJ said exactly what the previous regime said of Pettersson. It’s all about his preparation. He didn’t sugarcoat it, nor did he go into further detail.

This tells me they have already seen enough of the guy and plan to move him out in the coming months.

Sadly he’s not.

I get the feeling from the presser they are moving on from Pettersson.

How can you honestly convince fans you are rebuilding this team with that boat anchor around the kids.

Is Higgins still with the organization?

It's fairly obvious who he's referring to and it would be a crazy to make a comment like that if you're still employed by the team.

No, he's not. He moved out of a player development role into the multimedia department in 2024 and since has stepped back from that to spend more time with his family.

The graphic Donny shared made me go looking for the source of it and I gave a listen to the Canuck Way podcast on which he said that. It's very obvious what he was meaning, as much as he named no names, it was obvious.

I think a bit of credit should be given - from a good point brought up by Megs earlier - that they were part of helping a group with no real blue-chip prospects win a Calder Cup.

A lot of the players in Abby mentioned how important it was to have the Twins on/off the ice with them for their run.

I think the fact that none of them have really made a dent in the big club, is less about how little the Sedins did, and more about the prospects actual abilities/ceilings (which speaks more about drafting, than developing).

As I have said over and over. Sure. Move on, but don't fuck us with a dead albatross. No 12 year buy outs. No trading good picks after bad as sweeteners. No retention.

Whatever "deal" they do with Petey, it has to improve the team, not just silence the media. Our media driven decisions have been horrible. I throw Kane, OEL and Loui the Air Thief into that group as all 3 were media darlings before we got them.

Of all the things I'm thinking about for next season, EP40 isn't even on the radar. Keep him, trade him - whatever. Better season? Worse? Injured? Prepped for camp.

Until he actually does something, he's just an overpaid middle 6 centre.
Until he actually does something, he's untradeable.

There will be more interesting stories and players to follow next year.

An article from Iain Mac today (I've quoted the relevant part about SD40).....

It would be foolish to think that top centre Elias Pettersson, after more than two years of grossly underperforming the richest contract in franchise history, will find a time machine this summer and re-appear at training camp in September as the top-10 player who earned that eight-year, $92.8-million deal.

But it doesn’t mean Pettersson isn’t still useful as a two-way centre who contributes 50 or 60 points, blocks shots, plays on special teams and works hard. The new bosses have to decide if they can live with that. Part of that decision should be based on what they might still be able to get for Pettersson if they can actually trade the 27-year-old.

Recurring trade rumours and the accompanying public debate aren’t helping Pettersson or the Canucks, so settle the issue.

As we’ve written, Pettersson may be prickly with the media and outwardly miserable at times, but he is not a problem in the dressing room. Younger teammates may simply find him quiet, possibly quirky, but he doesn’t yell at or ridicule them, is supportive and tries hard when he plays. The Canucks can live with Pettersson — if they can live with his contract.

I'm normally fairly on board with I-Mac's takes, but this one not so much. While I don't dispute the usefulness of a 55 point 2C that plays good hockey in his own zone, I believe it is outweighed by the nearly $5M in cap space that would be found by replacing the player with someone who equals that on-ice description at a cap hit that is commensurate with the product on display.

Look no further than Marco Rossi. He produced at a 57 point pace this season for $5M compared to Pettersson's 56 point pace for $6.6M more. Rossi did this despite being traded mid-season to a new team, dealing with an injury, and being handed an average of 2 fewer minutes of TOI.

But how many shots did Rossi block? That is the real question.

...and is it safe for him to hit the ice with 5ths kids?
