Who on the farm is capable of stepping in and playing solid hockey on the bottom pairing for 15-17 min a night? Right now as we speak..., who can do it?Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2019 2:37 pmHot Potato Puck Handler - Stecher? I believe the team wouldn’t miss a beat if the 3rd pairing Stecher was replaced with any of Sautner, Fatberger, Juolevi, Teves or Rafferty. Chatfield as well. It’s a trade I’d explore if other teams are kicking Bennings white walls over Stenchers availability. None of those guys could do it. Cap comparables for Tanev.....
Cody Ceci $4.5M - Defensive dman. Younger. Stronger. Similar point production. Considered by many to have underachieved based on early projections.
Colin Miller $3.875M - Defensive dman with some 2-way upside. Younger. Bigger. Inconsistent at times, considered to have underachieved by some.
Matt Dumba: $6M - Two way guy. Younger. More offensively gifted. Still has some serious upside, particularly if he can get out of Minnesota.
These are contracts all signed in or after 2018, and guys who realistically bring a similar, or better, skillset. I don't consider Tanev and Dumba to be comparable players per se, I think most would agree that Dumba is a more versatile defenseman who quite obviously contributes more on the scoresheet.
Tanev has plenty of intangibles, and he's been a fixture on this blueline playing tough minutes and posting good defensive numbers behind a defensively inept forward group, and in front of some inconsistent goaltending. That being said, his number is not going to be higher than Edler's $6M, and with his injury history chances are that he would max out at $6M on the free agent market. He is going on 30, and in all but 3 of his 10 NHL seasons he has missed more than 20 games.....granted the 3 seasons he spent a chunk of time in the AHL before earning a spot as a regular, but in 2 of those he still missed 10 or more games between the two clubs.
If the Canucks have a strong season and make the playoff, I could see him wanting to come back at a bit of a discount unless the opportunity arises to go play in one of Winnipeg (brother), Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, Montreal, or Detroit, due to proximity to home.
Watching Stecher play this year I gotta say I love the effort, but there's a ton of mistakes that are coming that appear to be born out of him trying too hard.
Benn won't be moved before Troy. That would soften the back end substantially, and that added grit is, imho, one of the reasons we are a better team this year.

Brandon Tanev is in Pittsburgh now. I watched a thing about Chris a few years ago and he was a torontoilet fanboy when he was young so I'd say thats the only threat to him wanting to come back cheap.
Toronto will have gaping holes on that back end if Muzzin and Barrie hit the highway. This could be where he ends up

Oh Gaud no, Ceci is horrible!
He was the whipping boy in Ottawa and their fans were warning Leafers about him after the Zaitsev trade.
Leafers actually liked him in the preseason and first two Leaf games... then they turned on him big time.
Ceci is now the whipping boy in Tarrana (well they have a few at the moment lol).
In the present market I would say a dependable Top-4 RS Dman like Tanev would get ~ $5.5M x 5 as a UFA.

He's younger and punching below where people figured he would. I agree he's pretty bad. His cap hit is comparable though.Strangelove wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2019 5:06 pmOh Gaud no, Ceci is horrible!

The point of my post was that Tanev falls somewhere between Ceci and Dumba in terms of skill/value. But Miller is younger and signed more recently for less.....
Anyways. You missed it. I'll spell it out with crayons next time.

While I don't disagree that one of those guys can be a fairly adequate replacement for Stecher's 3rd pairing role, who among that group can step up to 22 minutes a night when Meyers or Tanev get injured? Meyers, Sautner and Rafferty is a scary idea for right D-men. And it's just a bad trade, and an inevitable injury away.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2019 2:51 pmI believe the team wouldn’t miss a beat if the 3rd pairing Stecher was replaced with any of Sautner, Fatberger, Juolevi, Teves or Rafferty. Why are we talking about trading anybody (except Ericsson)??? Team ain't broke. It's 8-1-1... you don't trade when your winning....

Probably because Stetcher is a weak link on that back end. Hes still the same turnover machineMadcombinepilot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2019 7:42 am Why are we talking about trading anybody (except Ericsson)??? Team ain't broke. It's 8-1-1... you don't trade when your winning....
