Allegedly the Nucks and Corns favourite team are in trade discussions regarding Marcus Pettersson.
Also allegedly are the Hawks and Bedard closing in on an 8x14.7 deal.
If he continues his trajectory, that's gonna be a bargain for Chicago in 2 years.
He has improved year-over-year so far. He hasn't lived up to the pre-draft hype just yet, but he is getting there.
Last year (in 69 games) he produced at an 35G/89PT pace. His plus/minus took a significant step in the right direction, and his power-play production actually dropped (still racked up 21 points there) while his overall totals jumped by a 22PT per 82GP.....that even-strength production increase is a telling stat imho.
With even a slight improvement the kid could be a 100 point 1C. Factor that into the projected cap increases and 2 years from now he's a top-5 in the league pivot making what last year was under $10M.

Yeah...and Frondell is going to take heat off him as a 1 2 centre ice punch which will enhance his production presumably.

Jamie Oleksiak eh.....
Interesting. I wonder what our blueline is going to look like in October at this rate.
In terms of young defenseman to develop, there isn't much beyond Buium and Willander.
Mancini is 24 and signed for one more season after this one.....I think this is his "Bieksa moment". He either shows the team that he can be a late-blooming 2nd pair defenseman, or remains the 6/7 guy who doesn't necessarily last beyond the 2027-28 season.
Adding Oleksiak, imho, means trading M. Pettersson. I don't see the either of them as being anything more than a bottom-pair guy, and frankly, watching Meaty get pushed around, play the puck like a grenade, or get turnstiled as often as he did, well, I'd rather pay 50-60% of that salary to a guy 3 years older but packing around 60 more pounds of beef, even if it comes at the expense of some speed.
Right now I think our top-4 has a trio of names pencilled into it: Hronek, Buium, and Willander. I think Willander needs a legit top-4 guy as a partner or he's gonna struggle again.....I don't see Meaty or Oleksiak as second pairing guys. Maybe a brute like Oleksiak still has that second pairing, stay-home, defender in him that is playable there beside a very mobile Willander, but I'm not sure that's the best way to develop the younger guy. Again, if it's him or Pettersson, I'm going with the size and strength of Oleksiak.
Buium - Hronek
Oleksiak - Willander
D-Petey - Schenn
Mancini
I dunno. Definitely tougher than last year's group.

What might enhance his production is having Frondell be his wing.... Or better yet, being Frondell's wing.
Either way (or as it stands), I think he'll mature to a perennial top 10 in the NHL point getter, maybe an Art Ross or two, and more than earn his contract.

Yes both would work.
However Hawks Management has already stated they intend to play them 1 2.
Hence my comment of opposition picking their poison.
In response to your MP comment there is allegedly a Pettersson Schneider deal brewing...

I think both KK and Mynio could develop into NHL players; both are in a better place now than on their draft days, especially KK.

I don't know that the Canucks stick with him past this season if he doesn't show something.

I think you are right that somebody is going out if Oleksiak is coming in. Not sure the salary savings will be that great, and I think the bad MP3 that we saw most of last year is a better hockey player than Oleksiak. But better doesn't matter as much these days, and neither do those savings. The move makes sense only if the return for MP3 is something that can turn into something in the future.

And Meaty is gone to the Rangers for a 2030 top ten protected first. I like this RJ guy!

I’ll take a 1st rd pick for MP3. Schenn can do the same job for cheaper given where the team is at.
Having an extra pick or two in the first round a couple years down the road may extend a window of contention if management handles the rebuild right.
