Still didn’t say he was a bum. He made some very astute moves from 87-94 and then made some moves and non moves that held the franchise back. But please by all means twist my words around to suit your narrativeESQ wrote:Yesterday.Blob Mckenzie wrote:I said this when ?RoyalDude wrote:Pat Quinn was a bum according to Bubbka. That's funny. A 6-8 year extension for Benning!Strangelove wrote:^ Too soon to tell regarding GMJB
Might turn out to be the Dahlen or Goldobin trade.
Might be a trade he makes in the mid 2020s.

Considering the way this season is going so far, unless you are pre-disposed to seeing Benning go no matter what the prospect of Benning being around till the 2020s ain't that far-fetched. Improbable, but not far-fetched.Hockey Widow wrote:Ya, ya, I get that.Reefer2 wrote:Don’t you know he is a genius aka God.Hockey Widow wrote:That's funny. I would lay money on an extension for Benning. Sooner than later. I would think in or around the X-mas break.
To leave it till close to the end would hinder his credibility in dealing with his peers, no?

The new trend these days is to play the patient game. Holland, Fletcher, Lamoriello and Armstrong are all up as well. Is another NHL team going to swoop in a poach Benning in the off season? I have my doubts.micky107 wrote:I would lay money on an extension for Benning. Sooner than later. I would think in or around the X-mas break.

He's shown steady improvement since his hiring. He appears to have moved beyond overpaying for depth players like Sutter and Gudbranson, and his performance last TDD and in the 2017 UFA season was admirable. At the draft table, he's made some good picks, particularly after round 1. I'm not opposed to giving him an extension. At this stage, I'm not sure what the alternative is.

You are correct IN. He was brought in to do a rebuild, whether ownership knew it or not. Whether it was politically correct or not to call it a transition vs rebuild. I don't judge his earlier moves as harshly as I think the methodology was different at the beginning .
His first year we got 100+ points. That screwed us and perhaps his rebuild. Hard to sell a rebuild to owners coming off a 100 point season. It was made easier by how Calgary dominated us. But his early goals were to rebuild the core and find players in a specific age range. He accompolished that. Now his draft picks are starting to show promise. A different stage of the rebuild.
But not wanting to rehash all of this, I do think an extension is the reasonable way to go. He has earned, imo, a 3-4 year extension.

A 5 year ext. - owners will call it medium length term.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Can’t see it. I’d give him a year because I don’t like the lame duck GM. He has done a pretty fair job the last calendar year and has obviously seemed to have learned from some of his earlier blunders. A five year extension would be idiotic.SKYO wrote:A 5 year ext. - owners will call it medium length term.

So if you were the billionaire owner of your Vancouver Canucks you'd give him one year.Blob Mckenzie wrote: Can’t see it. I’d give him a year

The only reason you can even handle a broom is all the shock treatment you got in Riverview.
