Well Horton may never play again... So Columbus gets a warm body and the leaves get a guy they can plug on LTIR every fall.

This is actually a good move for both teams. Columbus has salary issues, never mind the cap. They dump Hoton's salary and get a warm body to actually play for them. The leaves get to u load an albatross of a contract and plop Horton on LTIR, collect whatever insurance is there. Hoton's gets to not retire and Kline where he wants. Smart move for both teams.

LA should think of doing that for Voynov. Trade him to Toronto for Dianna. They get the D they need now, Toronto gets the cap relief. If Voynov plays again the leaves reap to rewards. If not they have at least rid themselves of the goof. They can make it Voynov and a conditional something in case he can't ever play.

Or trade him to Edmonton for something conditional. They just need to get out from under his contract. It could back fire if he is playing again next year but hey.....why not.

Ok, so Horton's contract was not insured so Columbus just could not afford the salary anymore, not a cap issue a salary issue.

TSN is saying Columbus couldn't insure Hortons contract before he signed it because he was hurt. They assumed one he got healthy they could Insure it, but he never did. They took a risk and it didn't work. If that is the case, no wonder they wanted to move him! Since they aren't a cap team, they couldn't take advantage of LTIR, while Toronto (loaded) can pull a Flyers/Pronger and exceed the cap (effectively nullifying his cap impact).

Ya I edited my post. It's not the cap that was the issue for Columbus but the actually salary. They didn't have 6 plus to burn next year, lower each of the next few years, but point being the salary was their issue.

And the TSN media fawns over Nonis' ability to rid himself of a ridiculous contract he himself handed out. Really, it should be Columbus getting the credit. At the end of the day, they get the only NHL player in the deal. It's not like Columbus is a market that can afford to go above the cap, so LTIR Is useless to them. Add to that the terrible insurance circumstances, and suddenly they get a player on the roster for money that was being spent regardless.

Nobody in their right might would take Horton off their hands, at least not without sweetening the pot. Clarkson obviously isn't worth his contract, but he's a much more attractive option than paying Horton to not play hockey.

Yep. Lou started this with the Devils when he traded an injured player to the SJS way back when the cap first came in. No reason why this loop hole could not have been closed, prevent an I jured player from being traded.

But this then negates the E Kane trade, maybe not so easy.

Nothing says it's illegal. So it is allowed.

You're trying hard to look at it only from Columbus' point of view. Toronto just saved over 5 million a year for the next 5+ seasons.

Trading Clarkson was seen as the impossible.
