Believes and states in front of God, the media and the rest of the world are two entirely different things.
Comments like that sound more like FA public persona damage control to me than a legitimate rebuild tenet.
FA...yo Jimmy, presser today.
JR...yessir Mr. A, that I do.
FA....ok...make sure you let those media honks and our ever gullible fan base know that I told you a rebuild is within your sphere of possibilities and entirely up to you, free reign and all that right?!
JR...will do Mr. A.
FA...attaboy Jimmy.
...Rutherford goes to exit the room...
FA....oh Jim.
JR..yessir.
FA...you do understand the Aqualinis don't do rebuilds right, on your way out pass me some more of that Alfredo sauce wouldya...
Four of the top 5 teams in the core four under twenty four ranking are western conference teams, Donny. Not looking good for the 26th ranked team that is opposed to being patient

Back when Rutherford was hired, the optimistics on this board dared to hope that his reputation around the League would afford him too much heft -- or at least, too much self-respect -- for that kind of situation.
But your interpretation sounds very plausible. To be a Canucks fan is to be disappointed, I suppose.

To be an anointed saviour in Vancouver is to be a disappointment - see ya Messier.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Same goes for Rutherford soon.

I asked Leo @ Google AI:
The assessment that the Canucks tend to favor a "short game" or short-term approach in team building is a common perception among fans and some analysts, though the current management officially states a desire for a balanced, long-term plan.
Key Aspects of the Canucks' Team Building Strategy
Tension Between Short and Long-Term Goals:
The current management, led by General Manager Patrik Allvin and President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford, claims a multi-year plan focused on sustainable success and building a strong prospect pipeline. However, the team has faced significant pressure from the fan base and, reportedly, ownership to achieve immediate success, which can force reactive, short-term decisions.
Trading Draft Picks:
A major point of criticism for both the current and previous management regimes has been the willingness to trade away high draft picks for players who can help the team "win now". For example, the team has frequently considered trading its first-round pick to acquire a needed top-six center, a move that sacrifices a long-term asset for an immediate need.
Focus on Acquiring Younger, Established NHL Players:
The strategy often involves acquiring relatively young, but already established, NHL players (around 26 years old or younger) via trade rather than relying purely on a full rebuild through the draft and development. This "retooling" approach aims to stay competitive without a prolonged losing period.
Prospect Development:
Despite the focus on immediate competitiveness, the organization has also put a new emphasis on a more intentional and personalized prospect development process to build organizational depth. They have seen success with some mid-to-late-round picks, suggesting an effort to build value from within the system where possible.
In summary, while management has a stated long-term philosophy, the actual team-building approach often appears as a constant navigation of the tension between building a sustainable future and making moves to be competitive in the immediate term.
