Virtanen isn't much more than a good prospect at this point.

He has everything going for him as a player that Travis Green has as a coach.

Bertuzzi took the slow boat to china with this development in the Islander organization, ya just gotta hope the case may be the same with Jake as those types of forwards take a little while longer to develop than others. Not completely giving up on the kid, yet. Frustrated? Hell yeah.

The Canucks need to be very patient with Virtanen. The truth is that he is only 20 years old. Power forwards always take longer to develop.

Hmmm, just thinking out loud. How about they draft the BPA this draft and then in July offer Leon Draisaitl a huge contract as a RFA and give up the first round picks for the next bunch of years if they can poach him. Leon looks to be a quality first line center that the Canucks may never be able to draft. He is only 21 and looks to be the second best player on the Oilers, pretty much fully developed. Offer him 7 years at 9 or 10 million. The Oilers could be hooped because they have to offer McDavid a max contract the following year or risk losing him to a free agent poaching. They have a lot of money locked up in six million dollar contracts that are pretty immovable. As well, the Canuck could be putting the screws to an Oiler dynasty because if they match and sign everyone, they won't have a ton of money left over to add pieces to their core. Usually it's not worth the paper, but in this case an offer sheet may be a good idea?

If they offer that up to the German they'd had better have Horvat locked up first. But I'd be down for that. Better yet, threatened to do that and offer up a trade involving one of our D as an option. I don't mean a screw you deal but a fair deal.

The Oilers might let us take him. Can you imagine how good the Canucks next four 1st round picks will be. Shades of Kessel...

In the Canucks draft history I very generously say 10 out of 46 first round picks are anywhere comparable to the German, so less than 25 percent. Giving up four first rounders for about as sure a first line center as you can get is not a bad trade off. He is not McDavid good, but what are the odds the Canucks will ever get a McDavid good player.

Why not just draft Vilardi whom seems to get compared to Draisaitl quite often that way we don't have to compensate a thousand 1st round picks if the delusional want to go for Draisaitl. Vilardi is free and a lot cheaper for the next 4 years

CP this team is not in the right part of the cycle to be pulling something like this off, it's a stupid move. How often do you see offer sheets and how often do they work? All they do is piss off tbe GM fraternity

The attempted poach has two outcome, either which benefit the Canucks in the long term.
1. We get Draisaitl.
2. We drive up the cost of Draisaitl for the Oilers so they don't have as much cap room to resign others.

With McDavid they could create a dynasty. The Canucks should do what they can to make that more difficult through contractual warfare.

How can getting a 21 year old number one center be outside the Canucks cycle?

The fact that you'd be losing 3 first round picks minimum for a player you could draft in Vilardi. Draisaitl isn't enough to save this team. I would assume we will need some of those 1st picks in the next couple drafts to get us back to respectability along with a Vilardi

I went to the "bird in the hand" school.
I think statistical probability is on my side of this argument.
Odds of drafting a high quality number one center is not all that high.
