He is so done.
I know he isn't the GM, but this smells of Burke. I always liked him as a GM, but his taste in goalies is pathetic.
They trade a prospect, the rights to Chad Johnson and a conditional pick that becomes a second if they make the playoffs. Johnson they were moving on from, the prospect is a low level one and the conditional second is the only thing of value they gave up. So it was quantity over quality to Arizona for Smith. Arizona also retains twenty five percent.
Not a bad deal for the Flames . Smith has two years left and they hope one of their kids is ready by then. But I honestly thought better options might present themselves but rumour is Vegas will grab as many goalies as they can and try to control the goalie market heading into FA.
It does smell of Burke though. Guy never could get us an elite goalie during our West Coast Express days.
Center Ryan Kesler may miss the start of training camp for the Anaheim Ducks after having hip surgery last week.
The Ducks announced Saturday that Kesler had the procedure to clean up bone fragments and will resume activities in 12 weeks. Anaheim opens the 2017-18 preseason on Sept. 19 against the San Jose Sharks.
Kesler had 58 points (22 goals, 36 assists) in 82 games this season. He is a finalist for the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward for the fifth time in his career. Kesler won the award in 2011.
The 32-year-old had eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help Anaheim advance to the Western Conference Final for the second time in the past three seasons. The Ducks lost to the Nashville Predators in six games.
The Ducks will have to protect Kesler from the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL Expansion Draft because of his no-movement clause. Anaheim submitted its list of protected players Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. All 30 teams will have their lists released to the public on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET. Vegas' picks will be unveiled at the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft presented by T-Mobile in Las Vegas on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN).

For once we agree on something.
Flames fans better hope he is a backup plan or part of a deal for something better they are targeting at a later date. At an injury plagued 35 years old, Smith cannot possibly be plan A, can he? And at 6M this and 5M next and a 4.25M cap hit, his price tag is too steep for a backup...at least if you plan on having a legit number 1.
Perhaps there will be a Vegas deal where they turn around and flip him to the Knights for an expansion draft available goalie they have their eye on?

One never knows with Burkie.
A year ago he forked over the 35th overall for one year of Brian Elliott!
(if he re-signs Elliott... can't see it but ya never know with Burkie... that will cost an extra 3rd-rounder)

There would have to be a big add, Vegas can claim at least a few younger better tenders in the XD.

From comments from the bountiful faithful, and a few friends in Calgary who actually are not complete "mouth breathers", Smith is a stop gap until his contract is up in 2 years while they try to develop one of their prospect goaltenders (I didn't know they had any) or find another option elsewhere.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Yeah I don't get the hate for the trade. The Flames need goaltending now, as they have a roster that could compete if they get some saves.
Smith makes more sense for Calgary than Miller does for Vancouver.
