Oh that would be painful for Coiler fans.

First Gretzky, then McDavid.

Tinsel town just doesn't wanna play nice with Edmonton.

I see him being gifted a piece of the organization...

Agreed on McDavid, I think he’s there long term. No idea on the rest of them.

Looks like they kept Henrique but they are now way over the cap with 22 players on the roster and they still need to sign their RFAs. Somebody is leaving and potentially more than one player in order to make it fit. Maybe Kane? Can’t imagine any team wants him for that cap hit and being the douche he is so maybe it’s somebody else.

Either way that team is as soft as butter especially if Kane leaves. Their toughest forward might be Connor Brown or perhaps old man Perry. They’ll be fine being the PP merchants they are in the regular season but McDavid is going to have to go even more nuts than he did this year for them to go deep.

The year after they are even more screwed - Draisaitl at probably $13-$14 million cap hit, Bouchard around $10 million. Will be tough to build a team with 4 guys making over $50 million even with a rising cap. That Nurse contract is going to be an anvil for years and looks good on them.

...and all that and a Starbucks latte is why I feel he will leave Diehard.

A legacy player with no Cup.

McDavid, I think, needs to go somewhere where he can win one or multiple Cups to cement a heritage status in the game.

Plus he surely as a desire to do so (the winning I mean).

I can not see that happening in Edmonton.

Agree.

And if McDavid leaves as a free agent I could see him winning the Cup in his first season with his new team.

It's going to be extreme agony for Oiler fans

That's a tough one Don...

When does he leave on his mission for a Cup? Whe he is still in his prime and demanding as much as 20% of the cap? If so, what Cup contending team would be able to fit his contract into their lineup?

Or does he pull a Ray Bourque and wait until the twighlight of his career to go into the wander searching for a Cup?

Or does he just stay in Edmonton and begin his post playing career, maybe with a small piece of the team?

Take care...

I think both he and the Kraut stay. I think they break the bank forever keeping the team on the cusp as they wont have the money to fill out the rest of the team. I dont believe Skinner is the real deal. I don't think their mix on D is good. I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see them move on from Nurse if they can trade him and his contract.

But their special teams are still elite. That alone will win them games.

They got lucky these playoffs. A fairly light series against LA. Vancouver team using their 3rd string goalie. A Vancouver team where their elite superstar centre disappeared. If those two things were corrected the Oilers would have lost in round 2. I'll give them Dallas. Dallas disappeared and the Oilers played a great series against them. And taking Florida to 7 was more a product of Florida chocking games 4-6. And Bob being below average for Bob.

I still think they will be competitive in the West and are a playoff team. But it is an illusion that they came close to the Cup. A lot of things have to go right and for the Oilers and a lot of things went right.

Of course there is the NHL factor that might want one the greatest players to ever play, win a Cup.

Agree, I think he stays in Edmonton until the pay checks start to dry up and then maybe he hits the road in search of a Cup...

Speaking of hitting the road, gotta love the tears coming from Stamkos over the Bolts not wanting to open the vaults for him again...

Almost $100 million in career earnings and on a team which has been in cap hell for years and he is still looking for a maximum contract...

btw that $100 million US is like $137 million CDN...

Maybe this off season puts to rest the notion that Florida and Vegas have an advantage over other markets when it comes to attracting players...

Take care...

So the Oil are now well over the cap with 22 on their roster, so somebody with a decent sized ticket has to go. They’ll likely have to clear at least $3.5 million in order to be cap compliant to start the season.

I guess they could get rid of Kane, but I have no idea which team takes him for 2 more years at $5.125 million per. That’s at least a 1st round pick as a sweetener, likely more, and most of the league wants nothing to do with that guy.

Ceci is another one, though their D already sucks outside of Bouchard and Ekholm so not sure you can weaken it further. Same goes for Kulak. I know the media loves what they did on July 1 but they will have to weaken their team to get under the cap.

Amazing how badly that team is managed - if they didn’t have Bouchard, McDavid and Draisaitl on extremely team friendly deals they’d be as bad as the Flames. Too bad for them this is the last year they’ll have those team friendly deals.

It would be a reeeaaalll shame if they had to move RNH.

We could maybe help a brother out with that if they'd like.

:D

They’ll need to move somebody for sure. Knowing the Oil management they’ll screw it up and then McDavid will play so well it won’t matter anyway.

What is his next contract? He's up in 2026. Does he crest 20 million a year? It's going to be a side show for the Coilers to wiggle around that salary cap. The German is up next year. He's getting 13-14 at least. Bouchard is going to be at least a 10 million dollar player. Quinten will cost us 15 in three years. Doesn't make JT's contract, Elias's, Hronek's, or Debrusk's contract look so bad. Demko walks in two years. Perhaps Hughes in three. But I try and keep the capo. Allvin is a bit ahead of the curve with his cap management but all it takes is one or two shitty move to fuck shit up.

$20 million might not be that bad of a contract if he is still the best in the league ...

We know the cap is going to $92 million next season and the league will get a big bump in HRR from the move to Utah and we are starting to have best on best tournaments which should be large revenue generators and tv deals are expiring in 2 years, etc etc...

Who knows where the salary cap will be in 2027, the first season he's playing under his new contract?

Take care....

Even if the cap is $100M when the ink dries on McDavid’s next contract, if it’s $20M you are still talking about 1/5 of your cap. If the German is already making $14M, and you allocate $10M to Bouchard, you’ve just blown almost 50% of your wad on 3 guys. At that point Nurse’s $9M is really hurting.
