The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

True. And traditionally this was avery popular stance, especially during the enlightenment and onward. The belief in a god that created the universe, including the laws of nature. People with this belief often do not see a problem in believing in some deity while simultanously having a scientific approach to life. Unfortunately, in the last fifty years or so, there has been a fundamentalist trend within all three of the main Abrahamic religions, ie Judaism, Christianity and Islam. People who take the more fundamentalistic approach reject all scientific findings that go against their holy books. This is a fairly new phenomenon. Traditionally even the church itself has accepted the idea that most bible stories ara parabels that should not necessarily be interpreted literally. It seems fundamentalism developed during the industrial revolution as a protest against rapid changes in society, by people who wanted things to remain as they were before. The Amish are an early such fundamentalist group, but fundamentalism has become much stronger more recently.

In the traditional church you can see how eg the Pope has declared that the church accepts evolution as a fact, and yet I'm pretty sure he also believes in a creator.

Outside the third world it is mainly US evangelicals that question evolution.

It is not controversial scientifically. The evidence is overwhelming.

The problems I commonly find with peoples thoughts on evolution is they don't understand that it is random. Mutations are random, some are adopted, other are not, some mutations hang around in the gene pool for thousands of years, others do not.

There is no apex species, there is no grand design (religion and creationism do have an issue with this point).

Stephen J. Gould liked to use the tape recorder analogy. Is evolution was music or video on tape and you rewound it, the odds are very slim you would hear the same tune or see the same movie twice.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Very important point! Yet I'd like to add that mutations that are a disadvantage usually do not hang around for as long as mutations that give you an advantage. But this is where people misunderstand survival of the fittest. Because what is an advantage in one situation may be a disadvantage in another. Which is why there is such diversity in nature. Chimps are stronger than us. We are smarter than them. Depending on the situation, one skill may be better, but it's not always the same one.

The genes for obesity and diabetes are another case in point. They seem very bad to us now, but in a setting with recurring starvation, the ability to effectively store surplus energy as fat deposits was gold.

Same with sickle cell anemia. Terrible disease, but you need two of the bad allele to get it, and the people who only carry one bad allele do not only not get the disease, but they also have a certain immunity against malaria, which is why this very bad gene has become so widespread in Africa. If you live in a malaria-infested region, kids with one bad allele have a better chance of survival than kids without one. The backside of this is that if both parents have one bad allele, 25% of their children will get sickle cell anemia, but maybe that's better than losing all of your kids to malaria?

So what may seem like a disadvantage may at times be an advantage.

Another misunderstanding is that humans came from monkeys or that dinosaurs became birds.

We share a common ancestor with monkeys, but our ancestors weren't monkeys.
The monkeys are our cousins, not our grandparents.

And the big hulky dinosaurs simply died out. They did not become birds.
But birds are really a type of small feathered dinosaurs. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/diapsids/avians.html

Today we know that many dinosaurs had feathers and that some had beaks. At the time of the great extinction, some of the small feathered dinosaur species survived, and today we refer to them as birds.
But they are just one tiny branch of the dinosaur tree. The big ones with teeth did not have any descendants. They just vanished. Probably because of a climate change.

Some scientists today think this was due to SGW.

(Sauropod Global Warming)

To wit:
http://inhabitat.com/dinosaur-farts-may ... l-warming/

Dinosaur farts may have caused prehistoric global warming

We know that today’s cows are responsible for producing staggering amounts of heat-trapping methane gas, a major driver of climate change, but British scientists now claim that dinosaurs with vegetarian diets may have contributed to prehistoric global warming simply by passing gas. Dr. Dave Wilkinson from Liverpool John Moores University led the study, which was published in the journal Current Biology. He told The Telegraph “Indeed, our calculations suggest that these dinosaurs could have produced more methane than all modern sources.”

Sauropod dinosaurs that roamed the planet 150 million years ago may have released more methane gas into the atmosphere than all modern sources combined. Although methane does not stay in the atmosphere as long as carbon dioxide, it is 20 times more effective at trapping heat than CO2. “A simple mathematical model suggests that the microbes living in sauropod dinosaurs may have produced enough methane to have an important effect on the Mesozoic climate,” Dr. Wilkinson told The Telegraph.

The researchers compared sauropods to the modern dairy and beef industry. “Global methane emissions from medium-sized sauropods that weighed about 20 tonnes would have amounted to around 472 million tonnes per year,” the study concluded. That amount is roughly equivalent to the 500 million tonnes of methane released into the atmosphere today.
Speaking farting catalysts of mass extinction… and getting back on topic:

BTW. I picture you as short, fat and balding. Someone who has always been bullied until the wonderful internet came along where you can spew your venom at anyone without having to man up to what you say. I think you are a cowardly little fuck who may watch child porn if your amount of time on the internet is any indicator.

To a punk like you, who calls me names behind a anonymous handle, people like me will always represent a threat. In your case you do not have to worry because you define punk and it is not worth it.

Also, you offered to bet Trump would win and I took you up on it. Remember? The fact you did not respond explains why you are a punk. All mouth and no action or at least that is what the chicken hawks say. The internet is not quite as anonymous as you may think so be careful with others. You can be tracked down. Not by me. just a word to the stupid, short and fat as well as balding I imagine.

I really tried to end this but you insist on keeping it going. All that is left is to block your posts so I am doing that. i am not a saint and guys like you have always made me want to spew you little punk ass mother fucker. I do not often try but I felt bad for you. No more.

I believe the standard wager is that the loser's signature must display a message specified by the winner for a period of one year.

The idea of this kind of wager is to bring shame upon the loser amirite?

Goodgawd man, don't you think the loser DBM has been shamed enough!!

Besides I only offer these kinds of bets to regular-posting upstanding citizens (and Reef)

“Trumpocrats”: Democrats for Trump launch a super PAC

Donald Trump is getting some aid from an unlikely source: disenfranchised Democrats who are abandoning Hillary Clinton and calling themselves Trumpocrats.

The executive director of Trumpocrats PAC, Christian Rickers, said his opposition to Hillary Clinton’s candidacy is due to her position on free trade, and it’s the reason why he and many other Democrats are abandoning their party.

Harlan Hill, a Democratic consultant who’s also supporting Trump said that there are a lot of people disillusioned with politics as usual, regardless of political party.

“Hillary has a 30-year track record of lies, deceit and fraud,” Hill told Red Alert Politics. “Even when she’s caught, for instance putting her own political ambitions ahead of national security by using a private unclassified email server, she doubles down on the lie. Hillary has proven — with regularity — that she will put her own ambitions and wealth over the interests of the American people. Hillary Clinton is the antithesis of millennial voters like me: a Wall Street beholden, anti-worker, trigger-happy neo-con.”

Polling has confirmed Hill’s comments. According to a recent YouGov poll, nearly 60 percent of millennials want to see a Democrat win the White House, but only 40 percent want Clinton.
I think, one day soon, the Dems are going to really regret screwing Saunders over…
