Beagle-Roussel are here a year too long and the ruskies are there a year too late....alll because the Pettersson and Hughes development curve took a decidedly team friendly turn in the right direction.

Right now they have:
Hughes
Edler
Juolevi
Rathbone
signed on left side. That’s pretty good.
They also have Benn who probably slots in as the eighth D. He’s a left sided D who probably plays better on the right side.
On the right side then they have
Myers ......... and deep down the roster .... Benn. That’s pretty much it. This is not good.
Rafferty, Woo, or Tryamkin could provide right side depth some day, but they are all probably at least another season away from being in the top six if they ever make it. Maybe they could go with Chatfield but I think he is AHL depth.
The Canucks need to sign two top-six right-sided defensemen before next season. Best bet is they are named Tanev and Stecher. I think Benning will end up defaulting to resigning both of them, and hoping Defensive improvement happens on the left side. Benning doesn’t have cap room to get many good UFAs for which he’d have to overpay. Stecher is an RFA so his contract should be reasonable if he wants to stay in Vancouver. I think he will be signed. Tanev will be tougher. Benning will either have to not sign Markstrom, or move other contracts out to sign him, but in the end I think he will return on a short term deal.

Signing Tanev is a must. Let Toffoli walk give Jake another chance, he will come much cheaper than Toffoli. Ride out Boeser, Virtanen, MacEwan, Lind on the right side until Podkolzin arrives
Trade Stecher to save some money and see what Rafferty can do on the 3rd pairing RS. Benning needs mining the field for RS D-men

to keep up with the play. Maybe a long term injury issue. Maybe that's just what he is now. Barely NHL level.
Rafferty has some fine offensive skills but hasn't to date shown anything near NHL caliber defense man even in a bottom pairing role.
Maybe it changes, I don't know. Like Mega, I watched a ton of Comets highlights.

I really expect he'll have a spot to lose at next camp. I'd rather they do that than sign Barrie or someone similar for a few years even though they play different sides.

I think of all our dmen I think green may be comfortable playing Hughes on the right side, and if he does that really opens up that left side. Hughes and edler, Tanev and rathbone, and Myers and joulevi could be interesting. If rathbone can come in and have a season like his old partner fox did that will really help us out.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that but they're going to have a tough decision to make on Stecher. Local boy, heart and soul type player, and extremely popular with the fans and his teammates. It does mean something and they need to be sensitive to it.

I doubt Benning wants to pencil both Rathbone and Juolevi to two of the top six spots. Benning would want two rookies fighting over one spot and the other practicing and coming in off the bench when there is an injury or poor team results. I don’t think Benn should be in the top six either. So that means the Canucks need to sign or trade for one or two right-side defensemen If they don’t sign Tanev and/or Stecher.
