I was reading the TSN articles on the leaves and their endless problems and it occurred to me that the major problem is the terrible media coverage of the team. They are constantly being bashed and saddled with unreal expectations. The fuss over what Wilson said about Kessel is ridiculous and Wilson should have kept his stupid mouth shut.

Some fan in the comments mentioned how Kessel's numbers are up there with the best except for his possession time and his plus-minus. In other words he is a scorer who does not backcheck well. This fan went on to say how Kane in Chi is somewhat the same with the big difference being the important goals Kane scores and Kes does not. He added that Kes would do better on a deeper team that could support his talent. Interesting idea.

Another classic case of building your offense around an overpaid winger that will never work in the NHL.
ex: Ovechkin, Nash, Kessel.

Bob Clarke, senior vice-president with the Philadelphia Flyers, addressed the role that he thinks environmental pressure plays on the leaves during an interview with TSN Radio.

“I don’t think Toronto’s any harder to play in as a city than any other place,” Clarke told the hosts on Wednesday morning. “But I think they overrate their teams and get their expectations too high.”

He said Toronto is a “middle-of-the-road team right now,” and that he thought “Carlyle did a good job with them.”

Hmmm I may have been a little confused by the first few words the second half of this article from this morning:

Earlier on TSN Radio, Wilson said he “really wasn’t” all that surprised when he learned that Carlyle had been fired.

“But it’s always shocking when a coach gets fired, especially one with a wining record,” he said.

Wilson also said he didn’t see any evidence that the leaves players were committed to defence, which led to Carlyle’s demise.

“I think sometimes they would, but more often than not they didn’t … and the result of it being Randy gets fired,” he said.

O’Neill asked why coaches don’t just bench a core player like Kessel to which Wilson said: “It’d take a coach with pretty big balls to do that.”

Wilson said coaches don’t bench a star player like Kessel for fear of losing anyway.

“I think the fear comes from management and losing a game because you benched Phil or you benched somebody and that’s always the biggest fear that you face — that your plans aren’t going to work.”
