The nearly forgotten Harriet Wheeler. Front woman for the Sundays, who were sort of a Smiths-influenced soft alternative band from 1990s. Loved them, loved her. Angelic voice, witty and insightful lyricist, cute alterna-chick who only had one toe in the alterna, the vibe of an upper middle class lady from the countryside who never did the country things herself (but appreciated those who did) and who did music because it was fun and in college got seduced by the guitar player in the dorm, whose only shot at the upper middle class princess was by playing guitar.
She was married to the guitarist, and they disappeared after 3 fairly successful records, reportedly to pop out some kids and lead a quiet life. And haven’t released a thing since 1997, though rumors are they’ve kept making music for fun.

Mighty white of you.
Aretha, Etta, Dianna and a whole host of Motown women
Wendy O, Annabella Lwin
Who could forget local gal Mary-Jo Kopechne
Old enough to remember when Ann Wilson was hot. Heart used to play our Jr. High school dances.
There are host of women playing blues/rock Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Samantha Fish, Ally Venables, Ana Popovic, Joanne Taylor Shaw, Rebecca and Megan Lovell (Larkin Poe), Sue Foley
Alice Cooper usually feature a hot new rock chick in his band - Orianthi, Nita Strauss, Anna Cara (current replacement for knocked up Nita)
and of course someone Lever and I have discussed previously, Chrissy Amphlett

Lol @ mighty white of you.
Haven't heard that for eons.
I was on a Rock-n-Rolla vein so MoTown was not on my mind.
I believe Poly Styrene is black.
How about I add Audrey Campbell to the list then....

How about Tina Turner then?
Wouldn't want Leves to be accused of whitewashing this discussion

Etta fucking rocked.
Aretha's early recording work was at Muscle Shoals, later, they brought The Swampers to NY for her sessions figuring rural Alabama was too redneck for her.
Not to forget Reef, Cassandra Wong

If you include the Bangles, then you have to add the Go-Gos.
Not the biggest fan, but the ladies from Fleetwood Mac.
