The NHL wanted to include Russia. Sweden, Finland and Czechia made it clear that none of them would participate if Russia was invited.
As soon as the last Russian soldier has left Ukraine they can participate again.

Czechia doesn’t have enough NHL players to ice a competitive roster. So who cares what they think.

But again, it is an NHL event. Host the tournament and just call them teams Red, Blue, Yellow, White, and Black. Fuck the politics. I guarantee you the players wouldn’t sit out. Or are there NHL player refusing to step on the ice with Ovechkin when Washington is in town?

When Ovechkin is playing in a Capitols jersey he is representing Washington. When he is playing in a Team Russia jersey he is representing Putin. Huge difference. That being said, I am hugely disappointed in the Capitols organization for not making him change his instagram profile picture.

And there have been rumours about Bäckström not really being injured… hasn’t played for almost two years now.

His IG profile is his very own. Freedom of expression is a thing in the US of A. You should be endorsing the organization for upholding the first amendment.

If Backstrom isn’t injured, and he’s sitting out because of Ovie, then he should request a trade. I suspect Washington would move him without the request if that was the case or move to terminate his contract for that sort of refusal to play. Besides, if he’s sitting out in protest, Washington is 2nd overall, with Ovie chasing down the all-time scoring title, without Backstrom…..then fuck him, clearly he’s redundant at this point.

To say that he’s representing Putin when he wears a Russia jersey is the same as saying that Canadian players are representing Trudeau when they don the Maple Leaf. An obtuse perspective if ever there was one.

The history of the tournament. This cash grab is meaningless beyond some simple bragging rights.

My understanding is that since very few North American players have any experience of international hockey since there hasn’t been participation in the Olympics for some time, the NHL/USA/Canada wanted this as a dress rehearsal for next year’s Olympic tournament.
And both Finland and Sweden will go full throttle. The players take immense pride in playing for their country.

So you think that Ekholm will take a full on run at McDavid as he 97 drives the net and risk concussing his Oiler superstar teammate in order to win it for the Blue and Gold?

It is an NHL event, not an IIHF tournament. Only NHL players…..so it can stay here or go there. I doubt it matters.

They won't hit any softer in a 4 Nations Cup than they would if it was Olympics.

Yeah, the Bäckström thing is just a rumour that he himself vehemently denies. The rumour is still there though.

And there is a stark difference between Canada and Russia. Canada is a democracy and Trudeau can and will be gone by the next election, while Russia is a dictatorship that has been ruled by the despotic Putin for 25 years now. Any serious contender to the throne ends up dead, basically anyone who dares criticize him does, and Putin keeps invading neighbours and committing sabotage and acts of terrorism throughout Europe. It is not the same. There is a reason why Russia is banned from most international competitions at present.

Per is working over Mëds pretty good in this thread.

Per is a very formidable opponent when it comes to debating politics, he’s torn Topper to shreds a number of times. Topper has shown to be quite bitter about it as well.

It only makes sense that if Per has dismantled Wiebo in the past that he's going after his chief lieutenant now.

I always find Topper’s responses to Per resembling Miller’s response to Brayden Schenn. Eating Knuckle sandwiches. Per is like Bob Nystrom.
