May 2016: The Vancouver Canucks traded Jared McCann, a second round draft pick in 2016 and a fourth round draft pick in 2016 to the Florida Panthers for Erik Gudbranson and a fifth round draft pick in 2016.

February 2019: The Vancouver Canucks traded Erik Gudbranson to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Tanner Pearson.

It’s like trading a rib eye and baked potatoe for a three day old tuna sandwich. You then moved the tuna sando for a Swanson frozen meal

Yeah it's only the worst example of the declining returns Benning seems to muster.

Garrison+7th -> 2nd -> Vey -> Nothing
Mallet+3rd -> Pedan -> +4th -> Pouliot -> Nothing
Kassian+5th -> Prust -> Nothing

Then there's the Kesler tree:

^ Interesting!

So years later one could say...

Kesler (now retired?) + 2nd (Asplund)

FOR

Sutter, Pearson, Dorsett, Lockwood, Candella, sacrificial lamb for the expansion draft

… plus 3 years of Guddy, 3 years of Sbisa, 1 year of McCann, 1 year of Bonino.

I took a few minor liberties for clarity’s sake, to wit:

2nd and 3rd on right cancel out as it was in reality a 9 spot pick upgrade and we still got Lockwood.

3rd and 3rd in the middle cancel out… as do the 4th and 5th on the left.

BTW Kesler (now retired?) averaged 17 goals per 82 games in 4.5 seasons with the Ducks.

…. and averaged just .52 points per game.

(and for that he received $41.25M)

WHO had the gun to WHOSE head??

OMG the genius raped Bob Murray!!! :rockin:

As for your examples of picks traded away above, every GM does those.

Picks are a form of currency in the NHL.

And you need to look at the big picture because he brought picks in as well.

I'd say overall he has done better than break even pick-wise...

The idea is to hoard picks during a rebuild

What if we drafted an Anton Rodin (Rasmus Asplund) with the 2nd or a Sauve, Mallet like Gillis did? Not one of Gillis 2nds amounted to a hill of beans

Or a Patrick White like Nonis in the first round....

Gillis doesn’t work for the team anymore. You may as well bring up Jack Gordon or Harry Neale’s moves. They’re about as relevant

Ya but...if its a salisbury steak...you traded a steak for a steak.

So is jared the salisbury or the rib eye?

Fuck I'm too baked for this....but I'm having a ribeye for dinner to ponder the universe

It’s called common sense. No math is needed.

Can you further elaborate on this? It's a quite difficult concept to comprehend. :lol:

This cancelling out only works in the event that the players chosen with the higher picks we previously had do not turn into better players than the one's chosen with the picks we acquired. Acting in accordance with the Juolevi Rule we won't be able to make such determination for 10 or so years.

So you're saying Nucklehead wasted his time digging that up? :D

As I said, I cancelled out similar picks for clarity's sake....

It's called a false premise.
