Agree. Mancini looks pretty good offensively, but I’m not confident they want him in the top four defensively. He might get there in time, but it’s a risk they don’t need to take. With Hughes on the roster offensive minutes are pretty limited. Willander is pretty much the opposite of Mancini. He projects to be a defensive stud, and he might get more offensively capable in time. With Hughes on the roster, Willander projects to be the one they’ll want in the top four to replace an aging Myers.

Mancini has an elite processor; he reads and breaks up plays and intercepts passes at a very advanced level. This jumped out at me right away when he arrived in Abby. He's been considered a stay-at-home defenseman throughout his career, and only now are we beginning to see him rush the puck up the ice with authority. I'd say his ceiling is very high. He is a late bloomer, and it will be fun watching his progress.

Don’t see the defensive acumen. He definitely has the size and skating and may grow into it. But he lacks the natural aggressiveness that a DPetey has that he needs to be a great PK defensemen. Think he gets a bit bullied by big guys down low right now. He kind of reminds me of a defensive version of Jim Sandlak. We’ll always want him to be meaner, but it’s just not in his personality. With Hughes and Hronek on the team his offence isn’t as needed as solid defensive play.

I'd hate to move any of our young defenders. The hot mess up front should be upgraded using picks and current bad fits.

Moving Pettersson and the 1st for Larkin+ works for me

Way too much for Larkin IMHO. I wouldn’t move DPetey straight up for Larkin. My ranking of the Canucks defensemen I want to keep is something like:

Hughes
DPetey
Willander
Meaty
Hronek
KK
Mancini
Myers
McWard
Woo
Breezebois
Hirose

Trade Hronek for Larkin without the pick and they’re closer to a fair deal.
Don’t see what Larkin has done that makes him much better than Jeff Skinner who never led his Buffalo team to the playoffs, then when he gets there he disappears or gets benched.
I guess I’m not much of a Larkin fan.

Addition by subtraction. To me losing the heart of the issue is the only real way to get by all this drama. Gaining the difference on their hits is an advantage as well.

Larkin did prove to be a helluva competitor in the mini tournay in February.

Yes. Larkin has a better chance of leading this forward group to the playoffs than Pettersson.

He also is more likely to “get into the fight” come the post-season.

Larkin has been a 30G scorer for 4 years running while being the guy who drives his line. He has also been a 1.0PPG player in 3 of those years. This season he missed that mark only getting 70 points.

However…..

Larkin’s skating is MILES better than Pettersson’s. The Canucks would gain $3M in cap space. He’s an inch shorter but 15 lbs heavier. He’s much better in the faceoff dot, and only 2 years older.

Considering what is available in free agency, that trade probably makes it easier to bring back Boeser, who I would be OK to “overpay” if it meant reduced term. I don’t think we can upgrade on Brock in free agency, and he’s a guy who wants to be here (or at least he did). I could see him finding some chemistry with Larkin who plays a similar, albeit a bit lighter, but faster, game than Miller.

And, as Cuz so astutely observes, removing Pettersson excises the remaining tendrils of the drama. The end of season scrums certainly gave me the impression that Petey is not the most popular guy with our current core group.

Larkin doesn't hold the same ceiling but is no slouch despite me calling him a cap dump to goad Blobby into a rage a couple years back

I don’t see the Blackhawks being any better next year than they were this year. There’s a good chance Bedard’s cousin McKenna could end up a Blackhawk.

2 - unlike "some" teams Grier could trade assets for continuity of success.
