But maybe with Mr Aquilini getting more involved in hockey operations again, he'll be able to impliment a winning formula this time.

It would be hard to do worse.
I believe I saw our prospect depth being dead last, or close to that. It could definitely be attributed to the overall lack of quality picks we've had in the past 10 years. We know management threw in 2nd rounders like they were leftover Halloween candy!

And nothing in the top 10 since 2018 makes things more difficult as well.

Shane Malloy:

Canucks: Why Martin Madden's scouting success with the Ducks matters here

As the Canucks consider hockey operations hires, they need to address worst drafting record in NHL salary-cap era

How it all plays out this week should address what has handcuffed the franchise for decades. Their lack of drafting and player development success should be of paramount importance in the hiring process, especially with the 2026 NHL draft putting pressure on the Canucks to make the most of four picks in the first two rounds and 10 picks overall.

However, the Canucks have the worst drafting record in the salary-cap era. The numbers don’t lie.

“This is a pivot point,” long-serving NHL prospects scout Shane Malloy told Postmedia News on Sunday. “And if they fail this draft, the rebuild will extend two more years. Instead of five years, it will be seven or eight.”

Of course when you're the worst at something, even modest improvement can feel like victory.

We'll be watching when Mr Aquilini convenes the war room ahead of the draft.

I just don't think this gang as assembled can rumble with other front offices around the league.

Teams are going to eat their lunch, I'm afraid. No budo.

Player Dev, which they were a large part of, was the one thing CoPoHo's said needned much improvement.

RyJo said he needs to find and Abby GM, what are the manny implications of the new GM and tenured coach?

This is exactly why I would care about the Xs and Os skills. Foote was running Man To Man like Florida but that was a poor choice. Whereas the personnel they had were clearly able to run Zone Plus under Tocchet.

So the system matters (it has to fit the personnel) and the teaching of it will also be key. Everyone has to know when X becomes O, so to speak.

The defensive group they have now seems reasonably agile, if somewhat light. They might actually be able to play Man To Man now, ironically.

Yeah I guess the Sedin's stating player development needing work means things will change, with the exodus of others on the team does that mean they feel the Canucks were simply understaffed in that area?

Maybe more firings to come.

With the twins starting at the bottom of the development/coaching team, at least they got a look from the inside as to what's actually wrong.. (trying to find a bright side)

I think you are on to something. The Dreaded Media (who I can assume hear things) has been openly wondering about non-player salary spending. I remember Jason Krog coming in to support Yogi Svejkovsky and now it's just him. Goalie development also seems to have taken a hit.

I have hopes the the practice facility, if it ever happens, will be helpful for in-season conditioning and for working on skills and small area game.

Those stats could be a tad misleading, I'm sure they don['t take into consideration the quality of picks.

Now I'm not defending the Canucks entirely here, they definitely need to get better at drafting snd developing their picks but in those ranges of years the Canucks traded away a fair amount of 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.Dropping out of those rounds significantly weakens the probability of success.

Really the plan moving forward needs to be attain more top end picks, and develop the draft picks appropriately. It should lead to an overall better success rate. One of the hopes I think we all had with Abby getting the farm team is more focus on development at the AHL level! That hasn't occurred yet.
