The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.
Simon Fraser University has expressed support for a movement to change the name of its athletic teams.
During a virtual meeting Thursday night, SFU’s sports administration committed to getting rid of “The Clan.”
The announcement came after a number of SFU student-athletes spoke out against the nickname through the “I am not your Clansman” social media campaign.
A committee will be formed to come up with a new name and a final proposal will go to the university president for approval.
Mason Glover, a running back on SFU’s football team, said a poll of the 130 student athletes who participated in Thursday’s meeting found more than 90 per cent in favour of dropping “the clan” and “clansmen” as their sports names.
Glover told Global News he’s optimistic a change is going to come.
“I think we have strong community backing for this,” he said. “So I think we will see a change.”
The Clan nickname is a reference to explorer Simon Fraser’s Scottish heritage.
But it is often misinterpreted as a reference to the white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan, particularly in the U.S., where SFU teams compete as part of the NCAA.
“The Gaelic meaning of the word ‘clan’ actually has a deep and rich meaning: family and heritage,” Glover said.

This reads like satire from The Onion or The Babylon Bee but I'm afraid it's real. The Cultural Revolution claims a local victim this time.
Yup, morons are on the rise as predicted in the movie "Idiocracy"...
The word "clan" was in use in Scotland for at least 435 years before the KKK came into existence.
But since the "Klan" was looking for a catchy name and happened to choose 'clan' over, say, family/brotherhood
... well the word triggers certain morons apparently.
No doubt the Scotch (and sane people everywhere) are deeply offended about this name change by SFU
... but apparently they don't matter because it's all about appeasing nutjobs these days.
THINK ABOUT IT
Is Simon Fraser University really this stupid... or are they appeasing the mentally ill?
In the latest instance of a streaming service reappraising its catalogue in our current social and political climate, Hulu has removed a Golden Girls episode over a blackface scene. Per THR, the season-three episode “Mixed Blessings” has been taken down due to the characters Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) putting on black mud masks while enjoying at-home facials. THR reports that the scene in question comes after the son of Dorothy (Bea Arthur) reveals his intention of marrying an older Black woman, which Dorothy opposes because of the age gap. When the woman comes to their home, Rose tries to break the tension by quipping, “this is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black.” Hulu has not clarified if the episode will ever return.
