I promised these Miskito gentlemen from Brewer's Lagoon on the Honduran side of The Miskitia that I would share their Miskito gospel sounds:

did some work on the Nicaraguan side of that area during the brief time the Sandinista were out of power.

There is a small gold mine that had been owned by the Hunt Brothers before the revolution. Most decrepit place I've stayed at. They kicked a couple of miners out of the bunkhouse to make room for us, The tap water was the colour of rust and thick. I rinced my mouth with Coca Cola after brushing my teeth because there was no clean water.

Buddy of mine spent several months working in the area, they discovered a few leftover land mines washed out in the creek beds.

Summer nights

Yeah, I remember you had spent a lot of time in Belize. The Miskitia had been a sister British colony to Belize for centuries and it was likewise destined to become a backwater Commonwealth country until the American oligarch Cornelius Vanderbilt became interested in building a canal via the San Juan River route and the Americans pushed the Brits out and allowed the Spanish side in to take over. They do retain quite a bit of English influence though. I think it's a shame the Miskitos lost their sovereignty.

It's probably the poorest area in Central America now and I believe it's still awash in guns from the civil war (the Miskitos fought the Spanish commies) plus there is a lot of cocaine flooding the area now as well, reportedly keeps washing up on the beach.

I think you are speaking of the Garifuna. They settled in Dangriga Belize and Blue Fields Nicaraugua. Near as I can figure they are the same as the Maroons in Jamaica. There is all sorts of mysticism attached to them but when push comes to shove, they are just runaway slaves.

No the Miskito Indians are a separate people from the Garifuna, their settlements begin where the Garinfuna settlements end in Honduras near the old British colony of Black River the Spanish settlers call Palacios. The Garifuna came from the island of St Vincent and were rounded up by the British and dumped on the shore around 1800.

The Miskitos had a treaty with the English beginning in around 1630s or 40s where the English recognized the sovereignty of a Miskito Kingdom and their pirates got to shelter in the lagoons from which they could attack Spanish galleons and enlist warriors to raid Spanish settlements inland. Worked great for both parties until the Yanks took an interest in the area. The Brits were also allowed to try several aborted colonization attempts, notably Black River.

Apparently when it was time to crown a new Miskito King the prince would be sent to Jamaica or Belize and they had a strange ceremony where everyone would get really drunk and fire off their weapons and it resulted in some injuries and probably a few deaths. I used to like to read about the pirates of the Caribbean when I was a kid and that's how I wound up down this Miskito rabbit hole. There were quite a few of these guys aboard the English pirate ships, they were good provisioners and handy with a musket Actually the Friday character from Robinson Crusoe was a Miskito, that character was probably based on a real life Miskito pirate named Will who was stranded on the island of Juan Fernandez and rescued three years later by the pirate William Dampier who returned him home. Dampier mentions this episode in his A New Voyage Round The World.
