Now we're leaps and bounds worse than Dallas...awesome.

Chiasson is a nice pickup, but the rest is pretty sad. Kesler was a better return.

Sorry, I meant for the Stars. It is bad for the Sens but I guess they will tell themselves the same things Canucks fans are saying about the Kesler deal.

Dunno about the return on the Spezza deal, the only one who played significantly last season in the big league was Chiasson and his +/- was horrawful.

Dallas gets better but they're still going to be in deep against the LAs, Anaheims and Chicagos of the conference.

Montreal and Toronto may add $30m to the pot each and others will surely add some as well but divide that by 30 franchises and then half it and see what it does to the salary cap midpoint.. not much.

I'm not sure why Seattle is such a sure bet to be an above average revenue franchise - right now they have no building, they don't have much of a pro hockey tradition to speak of and any NHL franchise will be directly competing with an NBA franchise in addition to virtually every other major sport as well. Quebec, sure, that's one franchise. Other than that (since we're extremely unlikely to see another southern Ontario franchise) I don't see any other no brainer potential locations out there. And if the dollar falls even Quebec isn't a sure thing.

Wayne Gretzky vying for NHL team in Seattle
By Josh Kosman and Larry Brooks
July 4, 2014 | 6:21pm
Wayne Gretzky has joined a group of investors hoping to bring a National Hockey League team to Seattle, The Post has learned.

The Gretzky group is one of three looking to bring an NHL franchise to the home of Starbucks, sources said — but each faces an uphill battle in that league Commissioner Gary Bettman has not said the league is ready to expand.

It is not known if the Gretzky group or either of the other two groups are eyeing an expansion team or hope to move an existing team to the Pacific Northwest.

You replied to my post with a story about a potential team in a city that I mentioned might not be a viable option to host an above-average revenue franchise.

That story contains literally nothing relevant to what I said and has already been denied by Gretzky since it was posted.

So thanks for that.....

PK Subban going to salary arbitration.....again.

I honestly don't get what Montreal is thinking when it comes to negotiating with this guy.

Last time they low-balled him and he finally signed a 2 year deal on the cheap.....and won the Norris Trophy.

It was inevitable that the Habs were going to have to pay for that at some point. He's easily going to be one of the most sought after blueline talents in the league if he ever hits UFA, so why wouldn't Montreal want to lock him up to term?

I would say he is easily worth as much as Karlsson and Phaneuf. Structure it so he gets his cash, but his cap hit is between $6.5M-$7M.

UMMMMM Phaneuf??

Subban will get 8 X $8m = $64 AND it will probably be front-loaded.

Karlsson got his 2 years ago when it was unsure if/how-much the cap would go up with the new CBA.

And yeah, Phaneuf doesn't even belong in the conversation bro.

Can arbitrators decide how to "structure" contracts? I thought they were just one-year deals. If so, weird. If not, Montreal is really putting it to their own asshole. He's got 2 years til UFA status.

8x8, get it done. It's really that simple, he's that important to their team (worth at least what Kessel, Staal Giroux, Perry/Getzlaf, are to their franchises). It will sting this year, but when Kane and Toews are asking for 11/12M per it won't feel so bad.

No the contract must be standard structure.

I think the team has a 2-year option if it's player-elected (too lazy to look it up)

Besides, Canadiens wouldn't choose that anyway because he'd be a UFA.

Agreed, I don't get what the holdup is here.

They're rich, he's an... "elite"... player, keep him happy.

Doubt this gets to arbitration...
