Being able to grab those Boesers and Demkos at the back end of the first round to the middle of the 2nd is key to building contending teams. You can still find gems in the later rounds, but getting those higher-percentage picks and hitting on them is crucial.
That is critical for sure.
Another thing I'd like to see, is stats on is the rising value of later-round picks. My guess is that the talent pool overall rises a little each year due to more kids getting better training. So as the overall talent grows, so does the value of later picks.
So I took a look....
Quick random look shows the average number of games played per player by round
Code: Select all
2000 2010 DIFF
ROUND 1 464 604 140
ROUND 2 218 270 52
ROUND 3 84 105 21
ROUND 4 51 64 13
ROUND 5 86 146 60
ROUND 6 54 70 16
Here's a look at the number of games (average) by players selected 15-30 (slowly trending up), and the number of players who played under 100 games (random)
(Keep in mind, there are still some active players from the later drafts)
Code: Select all
avg <100
2001 311 5
2002 322 7
2003 724 1
2004 384 4
2005 358 7
2006 364 10
2007 373 7
2008 410 6
2009 377 4
2010 509 3
2011 403 6
2012 542 4
2013 383 5
2014 434 3

3 second round picks coming back is crazy. Suddenly feeling jealous.
All of them in the 2026 draft as well.
Holy shit!

Like I said.
People guffawed when Conroy was hired.
Dude is bringing it.

I mean he's set for the next 2 years which gives him more ammo when dealing the likes of Kadri and Coleman because he is asking for down the road equity from GM's who are looking for win now capital.
Conroy could literally set the Flames up for a decade.

GMs of other teams are guffawing when they deal with our front office from the late Cretaceous period and find out they not only get to take our shit, but they're getting paid to take our shit.
We need some young blood. Is Rob Lowe available?

I'm thinking some of the players from 2011 could do better in the Canucks' front office and behind the bench...

Corn's tables
There are a fixed number of games available so where are all the extra games coming from?
Is it older players that are leaving the game earlier?
Is it undrafted players that are not making it to the bigs anymore?
With a fixed number of games an uptrend has to be counterbalanced by a downtrend elsewhere.

Every year, usually around this time, you always see some trades that make you go wow, how the F did that team pull off that haul for that guy?!? Then I wonder why the F can’t we ever do something like that. I’ve been wondering it forever and to this day still can’t point to one trade that falls into that category (more often the opposite).
The Hughes, Sherwood, Myers trades this year were fine. But to me they at best met the baseline of a return one could realistically expect. Nothing more, nothing eye popping that makes other people jealous. Like what Conroy just pulled off with a 32 y.o. player.
There’s still a couple more days for something like that to happen but who are we kidding with these guys. They took the first offer for Hughes and didn’t even try to squeeze an extra pick. Something I’m convinced could’ve been had. Guerin’s probably still over the moon for getting Quinn Fucking Hughes without having to give up more than they likely would’ve.
Give Pinky & The Brain the deadline and the remainder of the season. Then I wouldn’t mind giving RJ a chance to be our Conroy.

Linden for Bert, McCabe and what became Ruutu was pretty good for one.
But yes....your point is well made.

Pretty decent haul for the Flames from Utah. The Flames are still missing star power on the forward lines. Hopefully that will come when they draft 1st or 2nd overall this season and next. By 2030 they should have a pretty decent team.

Wow, how long do we have to go back. But that's not a bad one Donny. A good deal mostly because of the trade tree that sprung out from it to last a couple decades.
That's what a good trade can do for ya. The Weegar trade started with a good 6OA selection (which we gifted them while we end up with nothing with our 5OA), now turns into an extra 1st rounder last year, three 2nd rounders this year, a prospect and another player they can and probably will flip next year for another branch of the tree.

This is just glorious for all of us Oiler haters! They are very close to not making the playoffs this season, so that pick could be pretty good.
Question - if the Oilers miss the playoffs and they have no 1st round pick, I assume they are not eligible for the draft lottery - correct? So SJS who own the Oilers unprotected 1st round pick, could win the draft lottery??
