So he was just going to crack the deepest defense in the league? How were they not going to have to waive him? They had no fucking room!
You are as sharp as a beachball.

Virtanen.....
Jake was a not a terrible pick in the moment. He was a power forward, something the Canucks desperately needed, who could skate like the wind, and also had a very heavy shot. I think some blinders may have gone on because of his hometown proximity to the big club. What made him a bad pick is that he was a top-10 selection that was not BPA. So long as there are no glaring character issues (Ho Sang), you have to go with skill and IQ in those spots and trust in biology (that the draftee will physically develop into a body that can handle the rigours of the NHL).
Yah, I would agree with Jake's skillset package (size, shot & speed), but I think his IQ was lower on and off the ice. If he was smarter off the ice, he wouldn't have put himself in that compromisable sitation that prematurely put an end to his NHL career. On the ice, it seemed like he wasn't smart enough to recognize that he needed to continue to work on his conditioning to compete in the NHL.
That was my point. The other players that Benning passed on had higher hockey IQ.
Benning has the IQ of a shoehorn. That's why he hired Weisbrod to break down the big words for him whether it was the players, agents, reporters or fans throwing all these 6 and 8 letter words his way.
And you expect him to draft players with a high IQ.

Listening to some of the rumors about Crosby, and it seems a concrete possibility he would get traded this season despite his NMC. In that event, whether he should get traded to Vancouver, you know that the rumors would lead to the Canucks by virtue of Rutherford and Allvin’s ties to the organization and Crosby. You can easily imagine them being in on the bidding if Crosby agrees to leave Pittsburgh.
Even at his age, acquiring him would make sense and fit roster-wise. He would be the 2C if he doesn’t supplant Petey as 1C. Just the ability for players to soak in what Crosby can pass on would be akin to Sundin’s time in Vancouver.
If he agrees to waive, it will be to a team of his choosing. I can see Vancouver having a competitive edge by virtue of his ties to management.
1st, Willander and Chytil for Crosby look reasonable?

If Crosby leaves Pitt he goes to either Colorado or Montreal. Van would be a major longshot

If the Canucks are in playoff position, and Sid is still clipping at close to 1.0 ppg.....I'd make that trade.

Habs were his favourite team as a kid, not unusual for a Maritimer.
I can see it.
East Coast.
Original six.
His mentors home town.
Winning a 24th Cup for Les Habitants and the first in Canada since '93 after being "Captain Canada" for the past 15 years.
Helluva exclamation point.

Crosby would go to a team in contention. We are not that team. Plus, he stays in the east, with Colorado being the only team in the west as having a slight chance of landing him cause of his buddy MacKinnon

Elias Pettersson straight up for Matthew Barzal?
Barzal - 3 goals 6 assists 28 years old
E. Pete - 3 goals 5 assists 26 years old
Both players need a change of scenery
We take the pain in age gain (two years), Isles take the pain in cap hit - Petey - $11.6 per year, Barzal $9.1 per year.
I’m getting done waiting for the old Petey.

Whatever that was I, for one, would be surprised if we saw it again.
Either way he needs to do more than he is doing as our pseudo # 1 centreman.
As stated earlier in the year.
I'd like to see where he is 20 games in.
Considering the state of our overall team health that number may need to be extended to allow for continuity factors.

I'm trying a new approach of watching him without thinking about his salary.
What kind of player is he this year? Is he a solid, defensively sound 3rd line centre with some offensive upside? Is he a potential 2C in a scoring drought? If we had just traded for him, and were paying him 6mil - what would your opinion be?
Should he be on the first power play? I think he's too static waiting for the one timer. I've said before that a player of his skill and mind for the game should keep him in near constant motion on the power play and make defenders worry about where he is. If he's just going to sit and wait for a pass, put him on the 2nd unit. He's good on the PK, and maybe we just need to consider him a potential Selke nominee.

On the PP they need to get him down around the goal and the bumper instead of the half wall where he just sits there. He's not shooting enough anyway so get him out of there

How long are we waiting for, lol? The last sighting of the Alien was prior to the All-Star break in the 23-24 season. He was body snatched at the All Star festivities the same way Huberdeau was body snatched while transferring to Calgary from Florida. Im pretty much resided with the idea of the Alien having gone home and never to return.
Damn that Necas trade is looking good right now. 9 goals 8 assists 13 games.
