Some exciting quarter finals to look forward to! 8-)

France vs Morocco
The old colonial power faces its former colony. Lots of history, lots of emotions and two really good teams!
And Mbappé's mother is apparently from Morocco. Will there be rioting in Paris?
My take: France wins

Spain vs Belgium
Two enigmas square off. Both have a lot of talented players but neither team has really been convincing so far. Is Lamine Yamal ready to take on the role as Spain's leader on the pitch? Are Belgium's star players of their golden generation too old, or can they still muster the energy for a last hurrah? Belgium started with two draws against Egypt and Iran, then crushed the Kiwis, but, I mean, the Kiwis... Then Senegal had them beat for 85 minutes until they suddenly came alive and won the game in injury time of overtime. :look:
But sure, they did turn that game around and then they did look solid against the USA.
Spain started with a nil nil draw against Cape Verde. :wow:
They later crushed Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Austria (3-0) but had problems against Uruguay (1-0) and only beat Portugal in injury time when Merino finally pulled the wool over the eyes of Portugal's defence. They're a bit up and down imho, but they still haven't conceded a single goal. And they are the highest ranked team of this tournament.
My take: this is tough, but I think Spain wins

Norway vs England
Tune in for the Haaland show!
The man is a monster. Two meters tall, built like a brick shithouse. Is he the missing link between Neanderthal and modern man?
Looks like he has no interest in the game, just strolling around with a silly grin on his face, then sees the ball and lunges forward - Bang! Boom! Goal! Barely celebrating. Just a day at the office. Then continues his leisurely stroll. Looking at the audience, perhaps see a bird fly by...
7 goals so far in his first world cup, and then remember - the coach rested him in the last meaningless game of the group stage, so he has played one game less than Messi, Mbappé and Kane.
England is the higher ranked team with better known and better paid players - Kane, Bellingham, etc - but they often underestimate their opponents and don't put in the hard work, and this may come back to bite them in the ass. They had problems with Ghana, Congo and Mexico, even if they managed to win two of those games. I think Haaland could end up stealing this game single handedly.
My take: I'm leaning toward a Norwegian upset!

Argentina vs Switzerland
This could become a snooze fest. Switzerland is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but is a very tough opponent that you really do not want to play. They are good. Beat Bosnia, Canada, Algeria and eventually even Colombia, albeit on penalties. And their flag is a big plus. ;)
Argentina started out great with 3-0 against Algeria, 2-0 vs Austria and 3-1 vs Jordan. But then it got real. They struggled against both Cabo Verde (Cape Verde? which is it?) and Egypt, but won both games in the end. Messi is unreal though - 8 goals in 5 games. And a handful of assists to boot. The guy is 39! And a wee little fellow. I hope he gets to raise another cup and dethrone Maradona as the best Argentinian player of all time.
My take: Hoping for Argentina. If Messi comes through they should have this.

Yeah..intersting description of Haaland Per.

I read a stat page the other day (somewhere) on he and Messi covering something like 7 kilometers during a full game and 80% of it was sauntering about lol.

Once Haaland gets moving though dude is fast as fuck.

Like a stallion out there....

If it was Looney Tunes he would be leaving a smoke trail....

So Spain vs Argentina in the final.

It was a weird game, England vs Argentina. The first half it was getting pretty ugly, lots of fouls, three yellow cards and no real scoring chances.
Then in the second, after England scored, Argentina started to play ball and dominated completely.
Two goals in the last ten minutes of the game to secure the win.

If Messi and his friends pull this off, we must start to consider that he may be the GOAT.
He already has the record for most world cup goals scored.
If he can lead the team to consecutive world cup golds, I think he has to be on the short list.

Golden boot standings as only the bronze and gold games remain:

1) Messi - 8 goals, 4 assists
2) Mbappé - 8 goals, 3 assists
3) Haaland - 7 goals
4) Kane and Bellingham - 6 goals each

Haaland has already gone home to Norway, but the other three can challenge Messi for the top spot.

Smoke and Mirrors

US threatens Canada because Canada's smoke threatens Don's moment looking at himself in the mirror handing out the World Cup.

Crazy game tonight.

France didn’t show up for the first half. Looked like shit.
Their goalkeeper seemed paralysed on the first two goals. Didn’t even try to save them.
4-0 England after the first half. The first time in world cup history that a team has scored more than 2 goals on France before halftime.

Something must have gone down in the dressing room in halftime.
Les Bleus came out playing beautifully and started to catch up.
4-3 after two goals by Mbappé and Olise has an open goal - and misses.
Shortly thereafter England gets a penalty and Saka scores for the hat trick.

France scores again in injury time, but then Bellingham makes it 6-4 to secure the bronze medals.
It’s only the second time England medals at the world cup, and the first time since the gold at home in 1966.
