If i did my maths correctly, in my head, Canucks should have around 22 million in cap space to play with on FA’s day. (That almost scares me, with what they will do with it)
Only free agent I would probably over pay for would be Bennett.
Does that factor the increase in OEL's buyout penalty?
My math says that with OEL's buyout and Desharnais retention, the Canucks will have ~$80M committed to the salary cap next season with an announced cap of $95.5M.....so $15M.
Bennett will cost $8M.....especially if he has another playoff run like his past couple.
Yeah, I was wrong. Think I minuses Boeser’s cap hit twice. As said, I was doing it in my head.

Bennet is a -7 on a team full of plus players. He scores some tough area goals, kind of like DeBrusk. He gets as many goals as assists, so he isn’t a great play maker. I wouldn’t overpay for him. As a shift disturber he is excellent, but as a top six forward he is borderline. They shouldn’t pay through the nose for a shift disturber. He might not look that great on the Canucks.
Marner and a legitimate heavyweight would be a much better choice.

I tend to agree with this.

Marner is going to get 14 x 7 Berry Picker. They can't afford that. Give your mullet a shake.

The only teams that can currently give him that without making significant roster moves are Columbus and Calgary. I don't see him going either of those places.
Rantanen wanted $14M x 8 from Colorado (allegedly).....the Avs moved on. Rantanen agreed to a second in-season trade in order to sign for $12M x 8 rather than try and get the same money in free agency on shorter term because his agent had figured out after Sakic and MacFarland said, "Thanks for your best years, see ya later." when the ask was that high.
If the Leaves can't come to an agreement with Marner by the time the draft rolls around (and that will be hard given their salary cap), I expect to see him dealt in a trade where Marner agrees to sign an extension with the acquiring team.
But either way, I agree, the Canucks cannot afford that.

Marner has a full move and has said he will not waive. Maybe to get that 8th year he will. He has always played hardball when negotiating and has never given the leaves a hometown discount, not that he should be expected to. Rumour has it he feels he should be paid same as if not more than Matthews. He will not be an easy re-sign unless the leaves open the bank account. But Taveres will be off the books so they will have a little coin to work with but they need to keep their eyes on Matthews next big deal as well. I'd take Marner if we could afford it.
But then I'd be happy with Tavares on a 2 year deal if the price was right as he is pretty much an elite 3rd line centre at this point in his career.

27G/56PTs in 59GP…..your bar is high for a 3rd line C.
Tavares is 24th in scoring among centers. He is also winning 57.2% of his face-offs…..among the top 32 centers in scoring, only Barkov and JT Miller are better than him in that department.
Considering there are only 32 1C spots in the league, I’d say he doing a bit better than an elite 3C.
He would immediately be our 1C right now…..a return of 2022-23 Pettersson would make him our 2C at even strength but still our 1C on the PP with EP40 moving to wing.

Considering, the health of a certain 2C here in Vancouver, going after Taveras on a decent 2 - 3 year deal might be a smart move now.
Also, is Bennett primarily a winger or centre?

He's versatile but he plays mostly center.
Bennett
Ekblad
Pionk
Ehlers

I would be over the moon if Canucks signed JT. The team could use someone like him on a 3 year deal. They may have to move on Demko and another player or 2 to make room.

The Chytil audition should be coming to a end soon. Unfortunatly he's got 2 more years on his contract after this.
A short term Tavares deal and re-signing Suter at a reasonable number might be the Canucks best options.

HW- Marner is a UFA July 1. Any NMC clause is irrelevant at this point.
Tavares is having a solid season statistically. He's going back to Toronto for 7 x 3.
Chytil is not on any audition. He will play if healthy.
A centre will likely have to come via trade unless they can convince the good Granlund to leave the Finnish mafia come July 1.

J.Dicky showing his inner A-hole, saw Chytil in a vulnerable position and took advantage of it.

Dicky should have been pummeled into a wet spot. We don't want him back

Allvin definitely has a serious problem at centre ice and the top 6. The only solution is via this summers UFA market of you are forced to table these assets via a trade - Lekkerimaki, Willander, D-Pete and the 2025 1st. They have two options. And it’s looking very dim. Would have been nice to have added that extra asset from a Boeser trade.
I am enjoying the renewed enthusiasm with the Canucks lately but let us remember, the Blackhawks are the worst team in the league. If we are to use a measuring stick let’s see how we fair against the “haves” down the stretch.
