The goaltending wasn’t great, but I don’t blame the goalies for this.

Not sure what we could have done differently. We have more possession, more shots (40-23), win the puck battles, the game is mostly in the Czech zone… But they are extremely effective and capitalize on their chances while we hit the posts or miss the goal.

The Czechs have always been good at this type of counterpunch hockey. They have great D and speedy snipers. You make a mistake in their zone and they storm ahead on a breakaway. If you get an early lead they can seldom turn it around, but when they defend a lead they are lethal.

The Czechs are good. As I said before, they beat Finland and the USA and took Canada to overtime. No excuses. You can’t give them an inch. And we did.

Very disappointed, but fun for the Czechs to get to play a final in front of their home crowd.

Swedish club Modo trying to crowdfund return of defenceman Mattias Norlinder

Modo Hockey Club would really like to sign defenceman Mattias Norlinder. And the Swedish team is asking its fans to reach into their wallets and purses to help make that happen.

The team has launched a campaign on its website and social media channels, encouraging fans to help reach a financial goal needed to get the former Montreal Canadiens draft pick to “come home again” to the SHL.

It’s not clear how much Norlinder will be paid, but the campaign shows a target of $1 million Swedish krona (which is the equivalent of CDN$130,000) to bridge a gap in the team’s budget.

As of Monday afternoon, the club had raised about half the money needed, or a bit more than 400,000 krona.

Norlinder’s three-year entry-level deal with Montreal had an AAV of US$925,000, though it was worth just $70,000 in the minors, according to PuckPedia.com.
Norlinder, 24, was drafted 64th overall by the Canadiens in 2019. He spent three seasons with Montreal’s AHL club, the Laval Rocket, and saw only six games of action in the NHL, registering one assist. He had five goals and 25 assists in 123 games with the Rocket but was not given a qualifying offer by the Canadiens this off-season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Born in the small town of Kramfors on Sweden’s east coast, Norlinder played four seasons for nearby Modo as a junior, before being loaned to Frölunda for one season in Sweden’s top league.

Reminds me of the Packers in the NFL who will from time to time offer shares to fans in order to upgrade facilities and other non salary items...

A recent offering at $300 per share raised over $65 million from fans ...

Looks like Utah D Victor Soderstrom will be heading back to Sweden or perhaps over to the Swiss league barring a last minute trade.

He is allegedly ubwilling to re-sign with Utah.

Young defenseman could ditch Utah to play hockey overseas

One of the remaining restricted free agents around the NHL is Utah defenseman Victor Soderstrom. He has made it known that he wasn’t a fan of how things went last season when he only got into three games with the Coyotes after playing in 30 in 2022-23.

While the plan seemed to be for him to remain in North America for the upcoming season, that may not be the case anymore. Aftonbladet’s Hans Abrahamsson and Tomas Rose report that Utah is not inclined to part with the 2019 first-round pick. Meanwhile, while Soderstrom’s preference would be to sign an NHL deal, it appears as if he’s unwilling to do so with Utah at this time, resulting in him looking into overseas options.

Abrahamsson and Rose note that quite a few Swiss League teams and SHL squads have shown interest in the 23-year-old with his old team in Brynas believed to be finalizing a deal with him. In doing so, Soderstrom will be leaving some money on the table compared to other offers out there but it would allow him to return to the program he spent several years in before being drafted by Arizona.
Last season, Soderstrom played in 62 games with AHL Tucson, notching nine goals and 23 assists, both career-bests at that level but it didn’t seem to help his fortunes for a recall. Now, with Utah overhauling its back end with the additions of Mikhail Sergachev, John Marino, and Ian Cole, securing a roster spot to start the season will be even more difficult.

It’s worth noting that Soderstrom is now waiver-eligible so had he signed an NHL deal, he’d have had to go through waivers to return to the minors, giving other teams an opportunity to add him. Instead, it appears as if he’ll return home at least for the upcoming season. Utah will retain his rights as a restricted free agent and the stalemate between the two sides will continue for the foreseeable future.
