Woll & Benoit from Laffs to Flyers for Ersson, Andrae, and a 3d in this years draft.

Hmm.

I’m not seeing the Benoit/Andrae component of the trade as being anything other than a wash. One might be a little better than the other, but they are both in that muck of bottom pairing/press box talent that doesn’t usually tilt a team. But they are also bottom pairing talents with different attributes (Andrae can move the puck better, Benoit beefier stay at home). So there’s that. Tocchet likes his beef. And maybe Andrae has a chance to be more than he is since he’s 24.

Ersson appears to fall into the category of “who will pass through waivers but we could plausibly call up” to a team that’s moving on Woll, I think, because they want to avoid carrying 3 goalies and have decided to keep Hildeby. For the Flyers, they are hedging on Vladar, which makes some sense…. They are also betting that Woll’s last month was an aberration—fair enough—but it’s the injuries that are the real flag. Less of a concern if he’s a backup or 1B.

I liked this trade at first because I thought the Laffs were clearly the losers, but on a second reflection, I could see Andrae being the better defenseman next year and all years to come (maybe a 4-5) and the Laffs really needing what he brings. And at first I thought “Woll can bring back more, no?,” but the trade market for injury risk goalies that should be good but not great is never going to be outstanding.

Saint with an island of hockey commentary in a sea of CBC-hatred and prairie homo-eroticism.

In all honesty, I'm non-plussed about this trade. Philly wanted more Tocchey Hockey types.
Love the Sport. Love the Team.

Hate the League.
