Never would have guessed that Donnie was a general in the Kiss Army.

This is more what I heard as a kid and over the years.
According to Paul Stanley, the band's name was chosen because the word "kiss" was universal and could be recognized worldwide as well as incorporated into different meanings, such as "kiss of death" or "kiss of passion". The letters do not stand for anything, and the rumor that it stood for "Knights in Satan's Service" has long been denied by the band.
In summary the band got its name from a suggestion by Stanley in 1973 after drummer Peter Criss mentioned he was in a band tagged Lips.
Ace Frehley created the lightning-bolt-shaped "SS" in the logo.
The name itself wasn't an acronym, and Stanley chose it because the word "kiss" was universal in descriptive options as noted above.
