Perhaps Benning forgot to pay his phone bill?

I’ll worry next week. Probably a good idea to hang onto cash and see who is cheap after the frenzy. Lots of UFAs won’t find work easily.

The Penguins have acquired forward Jonathan Gruden and a 2020 second-round draft pick (52nd overall) from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Matt Murray.

Jon Gruden is an outstanding football coach and was a pretty entertaining commentator. Not sure how he will fare as a hockey player.

Joking aside, scouting reports on Gruden look to me that he's pretty much that guy in every organization who is versatile enough to have several paths to the NHL (in terms of the roles he can develop into), but is no sure thing on any particular path. Consider him in the Lockwood band.

I like this trade for the Senators. Obviously they are bursting with picks and A, B, and C level prospects losing a second rounder and a mid-level prospect what you have that glut for a goalie like Murray is nothing. Of course, it would be helpful if the Sens inked Murray to something longer term.... Murray looked mediocre-to-poor last year, good but not dominant in the two seasons before that, and great when he came into the league. But he's only 26, he's a Cup winner, and many goalies have an off year now and again. Given age, track record, and experience, I think Murray is a better 4-5 year contract risk than the recently signed Lehner or soon-to-be-UFAs Markstrom or Holtby.

Minnesota fleeced Nashville with the Granlund/Fiala deal and apparently the Wild feel the need to return the favor.

Kunin is a former first rounder who is 22 years old and has shown step-by-step improvement every year. He might not be the first liner who pushes the play that the Wild were hoping for at the draft, but I think we've seen enough of him to know that his floor is still a contributor at the NHL level and its not too pie-in-the-sky to think Kunin will be a regular 20-30 goal 50-60 point player.

Bonino is, well, he seems like a nice guy. He's a good extra center to have around on a contender if you aren't needing a first or second line center but like to have someone who can play a little special teams and who you can slot higher in the lineup for a shakeup or when there is an injury. Or he is a get-you-through-a-rebuild piece. But is that what's going on in Minny? Neither the Staal deal (because of who was acquired) nor this deal makes sense from that perspective.

Minny's getting a 2d and a 4th and Nashville a 3d. That's not good enough to offset (1) getting worse, (2) getting older, and (3) increasing your payroll....

The Wild seem like a team without a plan.

In that same spirit, I think Don Cherry should stick to what he knows best, ie jazz, and stop dabbling in sports journalism.

But he'll like get a cheap contract now, $2m-3m per to be a #3C.

Well, he's made about $30 million to date, so I would think that he's already pretty set for life....

Are Preds clearing space for something on Friday or is this all internal cap stuff? They aren't that far from the floor (though they have some RFA's to sign). Taylor Hall to Nashville?

Theres a good chance that he lights it up in his last year though so....theres that

I'm holding out hope that Benning contacts NJ Devils and offers a Louie Louie (he gotta go now!) for Cory Schneider swap. NJ at one time was having problems with money and the league had to step in and offer financial assistance. Schneider is owed $12 mil on a $6 mil per season cap hit while LE has $5 mil to go on the same cap hit. Difference is that CS didn't have a front loaded cap while LE does. So by buying out CS it would cost the Canucks $8 mil over 4 season or 2 mil a season. LE's cap hit would be 5.67 mil, 3.67 mil before dropping to the (ahem) devil's numbers of .666 mil for the last two years. The Canucks need the cap space now and this would free up $4 mil for them for Friday. In 2022 all of Sutter, Roussel, Beagle and Luongo's penalty will be off the books so two more years of Schneider's cap hit would do little harm. Jersey could play LE for one season at the mil that's left to pay him this season and buy him out in 2021, totalling less than 1/2 of what it would cost them to buy out CS. Maybe.
