the only point we need is DuPoint this year

sucks that we blew a 3-goal lead but really enjoyed the refreshing look - better structure, better break-out and zone entry, players don't stop moving their feet, and players don't quit.

Fun start to season! Bonus was watching the Coilers shitty D and G.

Friedman pointing out what’s important. If Cotter keeps playing like this the Canucks will get a first rounder for him at the TDL.

This was worth the wait. The refs were still in beer league mode, but it was an exciting game.

Quick thoughts:

* Zeev looked loads better in his own zone than the typical game last year. A bit more strength.

* EP25 should look at Schenn and Oleksiak and think, that’s my way to stay in the NHL for 15 years. There’s a long life if you can move guys. And if, unlike those guys, you can handle the puck like it’s not a grenade? Well hot damn.

* First it was Joshua, then Sherwood, then (kind of) O’Connor. Now Cotter? These types of players are essential; the individual player is not. There’s always another.

* Sasson looked like an NHL player tonight, drawing a lot of minutes against McDavid. He sort of kind of did last year when on the wing. That’s a huge difference. I don’t expect it to last, but if it does, it’s a found money.

* Seems like the plan is create offense with the fall back, jump zone counterattack. Worked great tonight (and was basically the whole offense). Requires speed. Is best against better teams who take long shifts or have 5 man rotations in the zone. In other words, it’s a good game plan if you have a few speedy guys and are playing the Oilers. Wonder if that changes against more structured opponents.

* A couple of bad turnovers coming out of zone and entering zone. It’s frustrating to watch because it can lead to quick counters, but it’s actually a good sign, despite the poor execution at times. Because it means they are tying to play hockey, not just get off the ice without a goal against. There are always times to chip and chase or dump, but it isn’t the default for winners, and eventually, they will want to be winners. So you can’t improve execution without playing the way you wish (some day).

* Jake DeBrusk is the most underrated magician of the modern era. He is so deceptive. He has you so distracted on the play that you don’t even realize he’s on the ice.

* Congratulations Manny. It wasn’t pretty, but things are always a bit blurry for you, no?
