Eye Reedz (book thread)

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

I am currently reading East of Eden based upon a recommendation here (Donny). Enjoying it, been a while to get into a book.

Not sure if it’s just me but new authors seems to want to bring politically correct stories. I read a book written by a POC and the amount of times they mentioned the skin colour of the main character reduced what could have been a good book. Maybe as a Caucasian I don’t notice when an author mentions it in the book.

Let me know your thoughts on this, Fingers. Almost picked this one up the other day. Definitely on my radar. If you’re looking for another classic check out Stoner by John Williams, often referred to as the greatest unknown American novel.

I have to get the E version of the book, the hardcopy is very hard to read as the font is small and my eyesight sucks now.

Just reading Hail Mary, a simple and fun book.

Chef is going through his retro classics phase still. Picked up a couple more today:

The Death of Grass summary

The Death of Grass (1956) by John Christopher is a chilling post-apocalyptic novel about a deadly virus, Chung-Li, that wipes out all grass crops, leading to global famine and societal collapse, following John Custance and his family as they flee London for a farm in Cumbria, forcing them to abandon morality and resort to brutal survival tactics as civilization disintegrates around them. The story is a dark exploration of humanity's quick descent into savagery when basic needs are threatened, focusing on the breakdown of law, the ruthlessness required for survival, and the loss of middle-class values

The Thirty Nine Steps summary

The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan: 9780141441177 ...The Thirty-Nine Steps is a classic espionage thriller by John Buchan about Canadian Richard Hannay, who gets framed for murder in London after helping a spy reveal a plot to steal British naval secrets for Germany. Forced to flee to his native Scotland, Hannay must outwit police and enemy agents (the Black Stone) while trying to uncover the meaning of the "39 steps" to prevent the assassination of a key diplomat and save Britain from war. It's a fast-paced "shocker" that established the modern thriller genre, focusing on suspense, narrow escapes, and patriotic duty
