Caleb, like his father, is oozing with character and integrity. The kid is committed to college next year, so the media can’t start any shit that would be even remotely plausible for at least another year. They’ll be busy fawning over his freshman and WJC impact.
Unless Manny pulls a Cooper/Ruff, at which point the team will have enjoyed a long period of success, Manny will be gone before Caleb is even a core player.
While I don’t doubt San Jose and the Leaves drafted more talented players, I think Vancouver got the prospect they most needed, a high ceiling 5 tool centre and future captain.

I don’t think they did poorly. Time is the judge, many teams who “win” on draft night don’t get the best players once they develop.theman wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2026 6:19 am Now that I have had the night to sleep on it, I don’t hate the Maholtra pick, I just worry how the toxic local media can turn everything sideways. Having 2 potential 2Cs in the Canucks system is great to have. The more I read about the Novotny, the more I love that pick.
As I said before the draft, Malhotra wouldn’t be my guy at three. But that he was in the 9 player tier at the top of the draft that didn’t have a ton of separation, and I fully concede the guys making the picks have way more information and experience evaluating 17/18 year olds than I do. And yes, I think Novotny falling to the Canucks is a good stroke of fortune. He wasn’t a player falling because of new concerns, he fell because the teams selecting in the 10-12 spots before pick 24 (when Novotny might have started getting consideration) all happened to have at least one player higher on their personal lists among groups without a lot of separation.
If there’s a disappointment it’s that the entire approach was conservative. From the players picked to the lack of trade movement.
On the former, BPA doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know what “best” is measuring. There’s a spectrum of risk, of potential upside and downside. Is the BPA the most likely to be a star, most likely to be a contributing nhl player, most likely to provide some nhl value? The Canucks were definitely trying to avoid zeros with these two picks, basing the picks more on a comparison of likely development paths as opposed to comparing players on above average development paths.
On the latter, so many teams were so active, we know the market existed to make deals to get the guy you want or to add picks. They didn’t play, which is also the conservative approach. You don’t “lose” by not engaging in a transaction, but you don’t win when you don’t play.
An interesting night; so many moves…. We haven’t even talked about the Peterka and McTavish trades—two players who too a step back this season and still yielded multiple firsts….

The Canucks just don't have the desirable assets other teams want. Marcus Petterson & Jake Debrusk are about the only two vets that they're willing & able to trade.UWSaint wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2026 7:25 am

RJ's inexperience might play into it as well.
I'm willing to give the conservative route a chance, the sometimes wild & damaging approach of the previous regimes has proven unsustainable for the most part imho.
It's all about the lowered expectations

Well management has had 12 hours to decide their best pick for 33. Here’s hoping they’re confident with the choice, and another team comes in and makes them an offer they can’t refuse. (Looking at you, Pitts)
What time does the draft begin today?

Brookes Rogowski, the big guy. They must have loved him more than Roobroek. Hopefully his floor is 4C.

Well, Quinn didn't scare them off Americans.
Elite prospects had him at 29th o/a.
Big boy indeed.
Brian Boyle?

He did play in the OHL, so maybe he’s okay playing for Snow Mexicans. He’s a flight risk regardless. Hopefully management isn’t afraid to flip him the second he gives a hint he’s not committed to the club.

Im not down on the Malhotra selection like many here. He being the consensus top C in the draft who had a fantastic development curve from mid season then exploding into the post season sounds like a great pick. Good wheels but a choppy stride isnt ideal maybe but he's a future top 6 pro through and through. I like some of those defenders more maybe but it's still a win/win pick. RJ drafted a for sure heart and soul guy with his first ever pick
Im also getting extra stoked about the Czech kid. Seems like a guaranteed future impact top 6 winger as well. He may have fallen 8+ slots into our laps and was easily the best player at that spot. Well done
What's the story on the giant? Can he skate?
