I can see this. He was unrestrained under Coach Bruce, then Tocchet reined him in, and now Foote is happy with the defensive player he's become.

There is some terrific discussion in this thread. It reinforces why I like this place so much.

I should have clarified that when I said "successful NHL player" I was referring to the entirety of his career (projecting forward) as a 1C (which is what he and his agent marketed him as, and the team brass were obviously sold on it.In what world is 465 points in 484 games, while being solid defensively not a successful NHL player.
Going into last season he had 412 points in 407 games. He fell from above 1.0PPG to 20 points below it in less than a full season's worth of games. He's currently at a 0.68PPG pace over last season and this one.
His production through 2023 was consistent with a 1C. It has been 2C at best since then.....and considering he gets time on the first PP unit, that's not saying much. He has 53 points since the 2023 season concluded, 19 of them on PP.
Unfortunately, a player is often viewed through a lens that considers his production versus contract value.....and rightfully so.I understand the payscale here. But taking his contract out of the equation... Petey is FAR from a bust of a 5th overall pick. In fact, exactly the opposite.
The other scouts/GMs would have loved to get him back then. They just likely wouldn't have signed him to a stupidly large contract.
The Canucks were not running out the door to throw money at him, if they were negotiations wouldn't have been drawn out. They caved to the demands of his agent (who represents him) because of local media and fan pressure. Pettersson said he wanted to negotiate in the off-season, the way his season was progressing at the time he signed, his agent would have been a fool to have let him wait until then.....if he had signed after his playoff showing I think the AAV would have been significantly less, and any fan support he had would have been very unhappy if it was not.
In a 2C role at $8M AAV, I don't think anyone is complaining about this guy. So I don't blame the player for the contract.
I think most people would sign that contract if it were offered to them.
I think most managers who did what JR/PA did would have been axed for the way things went afterwards.....the fact that they haven't reinforces the rumour that it was ownership who told them to do it.

I believe this to be the case as well.

I know, I know - it does get old, but I have been impressed with the upswing in quality of your posts. So there's that. Keep up the good work.
No one knows what is going to happen in the future.
All you can look at is a complete body of work. And his has been successful in any measure.
I disagree.
A player is worth what someone will pay them. It has no value on their level of success.
That would like saying a one hit wonder like Harold Druken was a success because his contract value was way under his production.
Agreed here. How these two still have a job after the shit show last year was, I can't fathom. Other that ownership meddling.
Re: The Petey Predicament
If we keep it up do you think we can coax Topper to return?

That motherfuckin' stubborn old 5-star mountain cook.
Nvm.....That probably isn't helpful either.

Re: The Petey Predicament
I'll say this -- that last shift in OT was terrific. It wasn't just that last play (which he just didn't give up on), it was also right before that faceoff when Sherwood's shot led to Preds possession and Petterson just picked the skater's pocket by being right on top of the play. And he did it with strength and leverage.
The other thing I liked about his game last night was that he made plays faster. To be sure, he was always choosing pass, but the plays were made firmly and quickly.
On his skating, there was a bit more pace with the puck, but you have to love the fact that after Boeser scored EP40 skates towards #6 to celebrate and EP40 trips on nothing at all.....

What's kind of funny based on a small part of yesterday's discussion is he almost fell down heading toward Boeser post goal.

Re: The Petey Predicament
That little trip was a funny moment givin' all the flak he takes here for his lack of balance/poor skating mechanics.
Though, I think back to all those midnight beer league games at 8-rinks in the summer, on rinks 5 or 6 - and that ice was terrible, everyone was tripping over ruts/bumps/frozen snow.
Nashville ice in OT. Couldn't be much better.
